Our Service

Dependable Sump Pump Repair Service in Burleson, TX

A failed sump pump leaves your home vulnerable the moment a storm rolls through North Texas. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter repairs sump pumps throughout Burleson, TX, diagnosing the true cause and restoring full protection. Our team inspects the motor, float switch, check valve, discharge line, and basin during every service call. Stuck floats, clogged intakes, burned-out motors, and frozen discharge lines all show up in failed units. We test the pump under full water flow, confirming it cycles correctly and moves the rated gallons per hour. Worn check valves often cause water to flow back into the pit, making the pump run constantly until it burns out. We replace failed components with quality parts and confirm the system handles a full pit before leaving. Older pumps near the end of their service life may not be worth repairing, and we share honest replacement options when that applies. Battery backup systems are tested separately to confirm they activate during a simulated power loss. Discharge lines are checked for clogs, freezing, and proper slope away from the foundation. Pricing is shared clearly before any work begins. Since 2007, Burleson families have trusted our crew to keep their pumps ready before the next storm arrives.

CHRIS & BRODY great team, in/out same day, very professional, very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, clean, clean, clean. Explained steps, Communicated proficiently, let Granny hover, & watch, I'm not easy client for any professional. The only thing I wish warranty was minimum 90 days, but I've used, & trusted 1960's plumbing issues, since 2015. We learned to do both roof top clean outs 100 feet minimum for tree roots backing up toilet paper, we only use cheap Scott very thin toilet paper if we don't want more than 1X year clean out. We are seniors, fixed income, every plumbing emergency comes out of food budget. We eat beans & corn bread when we have plumbing issues. God Bless Curly's BIG BLADE PLUMBING Out of Cleburne, Texas. Denise & Christy answer phones, very polite, always helpful, Denise will get you on schedule as soon as possible, never waited very long especially in sewage backups. I always ask for clean, knowledgeable, experienced plumbers. I don't hesitate to call CURLY'S BIG BLADE PLUMBING.

Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter came out to fix an incoming water line that was leaking in between two bushes. The previous company had quoted a higher price and wanted to remove the bushes and replace the shut off valve, which was still good. Big Blade Plumbing fixed the leak for a much cheaper price and didn’t remove any bushes. For that I give them 5 Stars.

The price was extremely fair and affordable so we went ahead and booked an appointment, Hershel and Dylan arrived promptly like within 30-40 minutes of us calling and setting the appointment, they got here and did exactly what they said they were going to without pressuring me into getting other services they executed the repair so fast and explained to me about my 30 day warranty and potential risks to look out for in the future! Sump Pump Repair Service

Diagnosing why a sump pump has stopped working correctly is the foundation of every effective repair, because pumps fail in different ways that require different responses from the technician. Our plumbers begin by understanding what symptoms brought us out, including whether the pump runs but does not move water, fails to start when it should, runs constantly without stopping, makes unusual sounds during operation, or shows other specific problems that point toward particular causes. Visual inspection of the pump, pit, discharge plumbing, and electrical connections often reveals obvious issues that point toward specific repairs immediately. Testing operation by filling the pit with water and observing the complete pump cycle reveals problems that visual inspection misses during static examination. Electrical testing with a multimeter checks voltage at the outlet, continuity through switches, and motor windings when motor problems are suspected as the cause. Check valve operation gets tested separately because failed check valves cause many problems that initially look like pump issues. Discharge plumbing examination identifies blockages or freeze damage that affects flow capacity throughout the system. Each diagnostic step narrows the cause and informs the right repair approach for the specific situation. Skipping diagnosis to start replacing parts wastes the homeowner’s money and often misses the actual problem.

Float switch problems account for a substantial share of sump pump repairs because the switch is one of the most mechanically active components in the system. The float rises and falls with water level in the pit, triggering pump operation when water reaches the activation level and stopping it when the level drops sufficiently after pumping. Floats can stick at high or low positions due to debris in the pit, mineral buildup on the switch mechanism, simple mechanical wear after years of cycling, or damage from rough handling during cleaning. Stuck floats either prevent pump operation entirely or cause continuous running that quickly burns out motors when the pump runs without water to cool the motor. Replacement floats install in a few minutes for most pump designs, restoring proper operation at modest cost compared to complete pump replacement. Some switch failures involve internal electrical components rather than just the mechanical float, requiring full switch replacement rather than just cleaning or adjustment. Newer pumps with electronic switches eliminate some mechanical failure modes but introduce their own potential electronic problems that require different diagnostic approaches. Our team carries replacement floats for common pump models on the truck for prompt repair during the initial service call.

Motor failures often signal end of life for sump pumps rather than repair opportunities, though some situations warrant motor service rather than complete pump replacement. Pumps that hum but do not turn typically indicate seized motors, jammed impellers, or capacitor failures that prevent the motor from starting properly. Pumps that run normally but move little water often have worn or damaged impellers that need replacement to restore capacity. Burning smells, smoke, or tripped circuit breakers when the pump tries to start point to electrical failures within the motor itself. Pump age significantly affects the repair-versus-replace decision because pumps approaching expected end of life rarely justify expensive motor repairs that may be followed by other failures soon. Newer pumps with manufacturer warranties may qualify for parts coverage that affects the calculation favorably for repair. Our team explains options openly so homeowners can make informed decisions about whether motor service or pump replacement makes more sense for their specific situation. Sometimes a small repair extends a quality pump for years, while other times replacement is clearly the better path given the pump’s overall condition and remaining service life.

Discharge plumbing problems affect pump operation even when the pump itself works correctly, and these problems often masquerade as pump failures during initial diagnosis. Check valves prevent water from flowing back into the pit when the pump stops, and failed check valves cause water to recirculate continuously through the system without ever leaving the pit. The constant recirculation causes excessive pump cycling that burns out motors prematurely from continuous operation. Replacing failed check valves restores normal operation and protects the pump from continued wear caused by the constant cycling. Discharge line blockages from debris, ice, or accumulated sediment reduce flow capacity and force the pump to work harder than necessary to move the same volume of water. Exterior discharge lines can freeze during winter cold events, creating ice plugs that prevent any water from leaving the pit until thawing occurs naturally. Cracked or damaged discharge pipes leak water that may or may not be visible depending on the location of the damage and its severity. Our team inspects the complete discharge system during repairs to catch problems beyond just the immediate pump issue and address everything affecting operation.

Electrical issues affect sump pumps in ways that can prevent operation precisely when most needed during emergencies. Tripped GFCI outlets cut power to the pump silently, with the homeowner unaware until water begins entering the pit and no pump activates to remove it. Failed outlets, damaged power cords, or loose connections cause similar problems that interrupt power supply without obvious warning. Circuit breaker trips affect the pump along with anything else on the same circuit, which is one reason dedicated circuits work better than shared ones. Power outages obviously prevent primary pump operation, which is why backup systems matter for properties facing serious water challenges from groundwater or surface water entry. Loose wire connections at terminal blocks or junction boxes develop over time from vibration and corrosion and can interrupt power supply unpredictably. Testing the electrical supply during pump diagnosis often reveals issues that explain pump failures the homeowner did not understand. Coordination with electricians happens when significant electrical work supports the repair beyond what plumbing scope covers, while our team handles routine electrical issues directly during the visit when within trade scope.

Backup system repairs deserve attention because these systems often go untested for long periods before being called upon during actual events. Battery backup systems can have failed batteries, broken chargers, or non-functional secondary pumps that would not protect the home during an emergency when the primary pump fails. Annual testing during routine service confirms backup operation, but pumps that have not been tested between service visits may have developed problems unknown to the homeowner. Battery age significantly affects backup performance because batteries lose capacity over time even when they appear to test acceptably during occasional checks. Most backup batteries need replacement every three to five years even when they appear to test acceptably to maintain reliable protection. Charger failures prevent the battery from maintaining charge for use when needed during the next event. Float switches on backup pumps face the same potential issues as primary pump switches and need the same testing and service. Water-powered backup systems have their own potential failure modes including supply valve problems and pressure issues. Our team tests backup systems during repair visits and recommends service when components need attention.

Sump pit conditions affect pump operation in ways that may not be obvious during routine use until problems develop. Accumulated sediment at the pit bottom can interfere with float switch travel or get pulled into pump impellers, causing damage and reducing capacity. Debris from the surrounding gravel or soil intrusion through compromised pit liners creates similar problems with pump operation over time. Pit lids that have deteriorated allow debris to fall in and create operational issues for the pump and switch. Pit construction problems including liners that have shifted or settled affect water entry to the pit and overall system performance. Repair sometimes requires pit cleaning, lid replacement, or other pit-related work alongside any pump repairs to address all the issues affecting performance. Severely compromised pits occasionally need complete reconstruction, though this scope of work goes beyond typical repair into installation territory. Our team assesses pit condition during repair work and discusses any pit-related issues with the homeowner so decisions about scope happen with full information. Some pit problems are simple to address while others affect the broader repair approach significantly.

Our Service

Why Hiring a Licensed Plumber for Sump Pump Repair Matters in Burleson

Sump pump repair involves electrical components, water handling, and discharge requirements that all carry safety and code implications. Licensed plumbers in Texas train on pump mechanics, float operation, check valve function, and the proper diagnosis of failed units. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter has carried a Texas plumbing license since 2007, giving Burleson customers verified, accountable repair work. A licensed professional identifies the actual failed component rather than guessing at replacements that may not solve the problem. Unlicensed repairs often miss discharge line issues, improper float settings, or check valve failures that cause repeat breakdowns. Licensed plumbers also recognize when a pump is undersized for the home and recommend correct replacement specifications. Texas plumbing code addresses discharge locations, backflow protection, and connection standards that all factor into a proper repair. Our crew respects those requirements on every visit. Liability coverage protects your home during the repair process. Honest assessments come standard, including clear advice on repair versus replacement based on age and condition. Catching pump problems early prevents the catastrophic flooding that follows a failure during heavy rain. Choosing a licensed plumber like Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter means the pump runs reliably and your home stays protected.

Most Common Sump Pump Repair Questions

Sump pump problems create concern for homeowners worried about flood protection. Below are the questions Burleson homeowners ask most often about sump pump repair.

Sump pump failure has several common causes that diagnostic work identifies. Tripped GFCI outlets or breakers cut power to pumps without obvious indication, leaving the system unable to operate when needed. Failed float switches either prevent activation when water rises or cause continuous running when water drops. Motor failures from age, wear, or damage stop pump operation entirely. Jammed impellers from debris in the pit prevent the pump from moving water even when the motor runs. Each cause requires different diagnostic approaches and repair responses.

Visible indicators sometimes point to specific problems. Pumps that hum but do not turn typically have seized motors or jammed impellers. Pumps that cycle constantly often have failed check valves causing water recirculation. Pumps that fail to activate with rising water usually have float switch problems. Pumps making unusual sounds during operation may have damaged impellers or bearing problems. Reading these symptoms helps narrow the diagnosis before detailed testing.

Testing during diagnosis confirms the specific failure mode and identifies any related issues. Filling the pit with water tests complete operation through a normal cycle. Electrical testing checks power supply, switch operation, and motor performance. Check valve testing verifies proper backflow prevention. Discharge line inspection identifies blockages or freeze damage. Our team performs systematic diagnosis rather than guessing at causes, which leads to repairs that actually address the problem.

Sump pump repair costs vary based on the specific problem, the parts required, and the complexity of the repair. Simple repairs like float switch replacement fall at the lower end of the price range. Check valve replacement and discharge plumbing repairs cost modestly more than basic switch work. Motor service and complete pump replacement represent more significant investments when the repair scope grows. We provide flat-rate pricing upfront so customers know costs before authorizing work.

Equipment replacement costs depend on the pump model and capacity needed. Entry-level pumps from major manufacturers cost modestly while premium pumps with cast iron construction and longer warranties cost considerably more. Replacement with comparable or upgraded equipment depends on the homeowner’s preferences and the property’s water protection needs. Backup system repairs add cost beyond primary pump service when these systems need attention during the same visit.

Emergency or after-hours service may carry additional fees depending on timing and complexity. Sump pump failures during major water events create urgent situations that warrant immediate response regardless of business hours. We prioritize emergency calls because the consequences of delayed response include serious water damage. Quotes come before work begins so there are no surprises. Financing options are available for qualified customers when comprehensive repairs exceed comfortable cash outlay. Transparent pricing reflects how we have operated since 2007.

Quality sump pumps from major manufacturers typically last 7 to 10 years in residential applications. Heavy-duty cast iron pumps sometimes deliver 15 years or more of service when conditions are favorable. Entry-level pumps may need replacement after just 5 to 7 years of typical operation. The actual lifespan depends heavily on operating frequency, water conditions, and maintenance practices over the pump’s service life.

Several factors significantly affect actual pump longevity. Pumps that cycle frequently due to consistent groundwater pressure wear faster than pumps handling occasional events. Water with significant sediment or debris content accelerates impeller wear over time. Power surges from lightning or utility issues can damage motors prematurely. Maintenance practices including periodic testing and pit cleaning extend pump life meaningfully. Pumps installed in larger pits cycle less frequently and tend to last longer than those in undersized pits.

Recognizing approaching end of life allows planned replacement rather than emergency response after failure. Unusual sounds during operation often signal developing problems. Slower water level reduction during pumping cycles suggests reduced pump capacity from wear. More frequent cycling than historically normal points to check valve problems or other issues. Visible rust, corrosion, or physical damage signals general deterioration approaching end of useful life. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter inspects pumps during service calls and recommends replacement when warranted rather than waiting for failure during an emergency.

Constant pump operation indicates problems that warrant immediate attention because the situation causes premature motor failure. Failed check valves allow water to flow back into the pit after each pumping cycle, which triggers immediate restart and creates the constant cycling. Replacing the check valve typically resolves the problem and protects the pump from continued damage. Stuck float switches in the activated position cause continuous running even when water levels do not warrant operation. Cleaning or replacing the switch addresses this issue.

Water entry rates that exceed pump capacity cause continuous operation when the pump cannot keep up with incoming water. Major water events with severe groundwater pressure can overwhelm even adequately sized pumps temporarily. Underwater entry sources like broken plumbing or major foundation cracks can introduce more water than the pump can handle. Identifying the actual water source helps determine whether the pump is undersized or whether other issues create the problem.

Pump short-cycling, which is rapid on-and-off operation, differs from constant running but causes similar wear problems. Float switches with insufficient travel between activation and deactivation levels cause short-cycling. Pit dimensions that are too small relative to pump capacity can also create short-cycling situations. Addressing these issues sometimes requires pit modifications or different switch configurations rather than simple repairs. Our team diagnoses the actual cause of operational issues and recommends appropriate solutions rather than just replacing pumps that may have been damaged by underlying problems.

The repair-versus-replace decision depends on pump age, the specific failure, repair cost compared to replacement cost, and the importance of reliable flood protection at the property. Pumps less than half their expected service life typically warrant repair for most issues because remaining useful life justifies the investment. Pumps approaching expected end of life rarely justify expensive repairs because failure of other components soon often follows the immediate problem.

Specific failure types affect the decision significantly. Simple repairs like float switch replacement make sense at almost any pump age because the cost is modest. Motor problems on older pumps typically warrant replacement because motors represent significant repair cost on equipment approaching end of life. Multiple problems affecting different components simultaneously suggest broader deterioration that points toward replacement.

The cost of pump failure during a flood event affects the repair-versus-replace calculation. Properties facing serious water challenges where pump failure would cause significant damage often justify replacement at any sign of trouble rather than waiting for failure. Properties with backup systems that provide redundancy might accept more risk on the primary pump. Our team explains options openly so homeowners can make informed decisions based on their specific situation and priorities. Sometimes a small repair extends a working pump for years, while other times replacement is clearly the better path forward.

Sump pumps benefit from testing at least once a year, with testing every six months providing better assurance of reliable operation when needed. Annual testing catches problems that develop slowly over the year and gives time to address them before they cause flood events. Spring testing before the typical heavy rain season makes sense in many regions. Fall testing before winter freezing risks also provides timely verification.

The testing process is straightforward enough for homeowners to handle. Filling the pit with water from a bucket or garden hose causes the float switch to activate, which should trigger pump operation. Watching the pump cycle through its operation confirms proper activation, water removal, and deactivation when the water level drops. Listening for unusual sounds during operation identifies developing problems. Verifying that the discharge actually moves water away from the foundation confirms complete system operation.

Professional inspection during scheduled service catches problems beyond what homeowner testing reveals. Visual examination of pump condition, electrical connections, and pit conditions identifies issues that may not show up during operation tests. Battery testing on backup systems requires proper equipment that most homeowners do not have. Check valve operation testing involves observation that benefits from professional experience. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter offers maintenance plans that include scheduled sump pump testing and inspection for homeowners who want professional verification of system readiness.

Float switch problems are among the most common sump pump issues across residential applications. The float moves with water level and triggers pump operation, making it one of the most mechanically active components in the system. Float failure modes include sticking at high or low positions due to debris, mechanical wear after thousands of cycles, electrical failures within the switch mechanism, and damage from water with heavy mineral content.

Check valve failures are another extremely common problem that often gets misdiagnosed as pump failure. The check valve prevents water in the discharge line from flowing back into the pit when the pump stops. Failed check valves cause water recirculation that creates constant pump cycling, premature pump wear, and inadequate water removal. Replacing failed check valves is one of the most cost-effective repairs and often dramatically improves system performance.

Power supply issues including tripped GFCI outlets, breaker trips, and failed outlets prevent pumps from operating when they should. These issues often go unnoticed until water begins entering the pit and homeowners discover the pump has not activated. Discharge plumbing problems including frozen lines, blockages, and damaged pipes affect pump operation even when the pump itself works correctly. Our team addresses all these common issues during repair visits and helps homeowners understand the most likely problems to watch for between service visits.

Backup sump pumps provide protection during the situations when primary pumps fail or when power outages prevent their operation. Properties facing serious water challenges benefit significantly from backup protection because the consequences of pump failure during major events include substantial water damage. Battery backup systems provide protection during power outages that often accompany the storms that bring heavy water entry. Water-powered backup systems offer alternative protection that operates as long as municipal water supply continues.

Several considerations affect whether backup investment makes sense for a specific property. Properties with finished basements containing valuable contents face higher potential losses from pump failure than properties with unfinished basements or crawl spaces only. Properties in areas prone to power outages during storms benefit more from battery backup than properties with reliable electrical service. Properties with high groundwater that produces constant pump cycling face higher pump failure risk that backup protection addresses.

Cost considerations also affect the decision. Backup systems represent additional investment beyond primary pump cost. Battery systems require periodic battery replacement that adds to ongoing operating cost. Water-powered systems consume significant water during operation but eliminate battery replacement costs. Our team discusses backup options openly during installation and repair conversations so homeowners can make informed decisions about whether backup protection makes sense for their specific situation.
