Dependable Water Heater Installation Service in Burleson, TX
A new water heater is one of the most important upgrades a property owner can make, and Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter takes that responsibility seriously. We install tank-style units, tankless systems, gas models, and electric models to fit different households and budgets. Our team properly sizes each unit based on demand, fuel type, and family size; this prevents cold showers and wasted energy. Every installation follows local Burleson codes and Texas plumbing standards. We pull permits when required, so the work is documented and inspected. Connections to gas lines, water supply lines, and venting are sealed and tested before we leave. Sediment traps, expansion tanks, and drip pans are installed where the code calls for them. We also strap units in place to meet seismic and safety requirements. Old units are drained, disconnected, and hauled away at no extra hassle to the customer. Customers receive a walkthrough of the new system, including thermostat settings and maintenance tips. With licensed plumbers handling each job, the result is a safer install and a longer-lasting appliance. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter has served the Burleson area since 2007, building a reputation for honest recommendations and quality workmanship.

CHRIS & BRODY great team, in/out same day, very professional, very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, clean, clean, clean. Explained steps, Communicated proficiently, let Granny hover, & watch, I'm not easy client for any professional. The only thing I wish warranty was minimum 90 days, but I've used, & trusted 1960's plumbing issues, since 2015. We learned to do both roof top clean outs 100 feet minimum for tree roots backing up toilet paper, we only use cheap Scott very thin toilet paper if we don't want more than 1X year clean out. We are seniors, fixed income, every plumbing emergency comes out of food budget. We eat beans & corn bread when we have plumbing issues. God Bless Curly's BIG BLADE PLUMBING Out of Cleburne, Texas. Denise & Christy answer phones, very polite, always helpful, Denise will get you on schedule as soon as possible, never waited very long especially in sewage backups. I always ask for clean, knowledgeable, experienced plumbers. I don't hesitate to call CURLY'S BIG BLADE PLUMBING.

Huge thank you to Lee and his helper! I had a hose burst on my water heater in the early morning. Big Blade was able to send a crew out fast and get the hose replaced.
Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter came out to fix an incoming water line that was leaking in between two bushes. The previous company had quoted a higher price and wanted to remove the bushes and replace the shut off valve, which was still good. Big Blade Plumbing fixed the leak for a much cheaper price and didn’t remove any bushes. For that I give them 5 Stars.
Absolutely one of the best out there! You cannot go wrong using Big Blade, they are awesome.
The price they quoted was the price we paid. No hidden fees! Quality work at a fair price! Professional and courteous!
After having a different company come out and price gouge me and calling around I couldn’t find anybody to help me with my clogged line, I was parked at a gas station and saw BIG BLADE truck drive by so I got out my phone and called, I was greeted on the phone by Denise who was extremely polite and professional, with no high pressure in setting the appointment. COMPLETED SERVICE CALLS
Water Heater Installation Service
Water heater installation begins with a careful assessment of your current setup before any equipment is touched or any pricing is finalized. Our plumbers measure the available space in your closet, garage, or attic, and they verify the clearances required by both local code and manufacturer specifications so the new unit fits safely without crowding combustibles or restricting service access. We confirm the existing fuel source, which in Burleson homes is typically natural gas, propane, or electric, and we check the size and condition of the supply lines feeding the unit to make sure they can handle the new equipment without modification or upsizing. The shutoff valves on both the cold water inlet and the gas line are inspected for function, since seized, leaking, or outdated gate valves should be replaced during the installation rather than left for a future failure. Pipe diameters are measured to confirm they match the new unit’s requirements, because tankless conversions almost always require larger gas lines than tank units, and undersized lines lead to error codes and poor performance. We also check the existing flue or vent stack for proper rise, pitch, material, and termination, given that improper venting is one of the most common code violations we find in older installations across North Texas. Local water hardness, which is moderate to high across the Burleson and Tarrant County area, also influences whether we recommend a softener, scale reduction system, or anode rod upgrade alongside the new heater. Every observation from this assessment is documented and shared with you in plain language before we present equipment options, so the decision you make is informed rather than rushed.
Sizing a water heater correctly is one of the most important parts of the entire installation process, and it is where many do-it-yourself replacements and rushed jobs go wrong. A unit that is undersized will run out of hot water during back-to-back showers or when multiple fixtures demand hot water at the same moment, leaving family members frustrated and cold. An oversized unit, on the other hand, wastes energy heating water that sits unused in the tank, which drives up monthly utility bills without adding any real comfort or capacity. For tank water heaters, we calculate the first-hour rating based on the number of bathrooms in the home, the total household occupants, and major appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and soaking tubs that pull large volumes of hot water. Tankless units are sized differently, using flow rate measured in gallons per minute combined with the required temperature rise from incoming groundwater to your desired output temperature. North Texas winters bring incoming groundwater temperatures down significantly, sometimes into the low 50s, which reduces the effective output of any tankless unit during the coldest months of the year. We factor in worst-case winter conditions rather than summer averages, which keeps your hot water performance consistent in January just as it is in July. Future household changes, such as a growing family, a planned bathroom addition, or aging-in-place modifications, also weigh into the final recommendation we make for your home.
Tank water heater installation starts with safely draining and disconnecting the old unit, which requires patience and the right technique to avoid mess or damage. We shut off the gas supply or electrical power at the unit, close the cold water inlet valve, and open the drain to relieve tank pressure before any disconnection happens, which protects both the plumber and your property. The old tank is then carefully maneuvered out of its location, which can be challenging in tight closets, second-floor attics with pull-down stairs, or garages with low ceilings and narrow doorways. New water connections are made using flexible stainless steel supply lines, a fresh quarter-turn ball valve on the cold inlet, and a temperature and pressure relief valve correctly rated for the unit’s BTU and capacity. The drip pan beneath the tank is replaced when it is damaged, missing, or not drained to an approved location, which protects your floors and walls from leak damage down the road. On gas installations, we install a new sediment trap, also called a drip leg, on the gas line and verify supply pressure using a manometer to make sure the unit will fire correctly under load. The flue connection is reassembled with the correct rise, slope, and clearance from combustibles per code, and any double-wall vent transitions are properly sealed to prevent backdrafting. Once the tank is filled and air is fully purged from the hot water lines, we test every joint for leaks, verify proper burner ignition or element operation, and confirm the thermostat is calibrated.
Tankless water heater installation involves significantly more work than a standard tank swap, and it deserves the additional time and attention to be done right. The mounting wall must be capable of supporting the unit’s weight when full, and the surrounding clearances must meet manufacturer specifications for combustion air, service access, and proper discharge of exhaust gases. Gas lines almost always need to be upsized for tankless conversions, since on-demand burners draw far more BTUs than tank units, often requiring three-quarter inch or even one-inch pipe back to the meter. Venting must be installed using approved stainless steel or PVC, depending on whether the model is non-condensing or condensing, and the termination must be the correct distance from windows, soffits, and grade per code. Dedicated electrical service is required for many power-vented and condensing units, which means coordinating with an electrician or installing a new circuit where permitted by trade scope. Condensate produced by high-efficiency models has to be routed to an approved drain location, and a neutralizer is sometimes recommended to protect cast iron piping from acidic discharge over time. Isolation valves are installed on both the hot and cold sides of the unit, which makes future flushing, descaling, and warranty service straightforward instead of requiring partial disassembly. The unit is then programmed to a safe setpoint, usually 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and we walk you through the digital controls, optional remote operation, and the recommended annual maintenance schedule before leaving.
Heat pump water heaters, often called hybrid units, offer significant energy savings when installed in the right environment, but they are not a fit for every Burleson home. These units pull heat from the surrounding air to warm the water in the tank, so they need a minimum volume of free space around them to operate efficiently and without short-cycling. Manufacturer specifications typically call for 700 to 1,000 cubic feet of surrounding air, which rules out small interior closets unless the space is ducted to a larger area like a garage or attic. We verify that the installation location meets airflow requirements before recommending a hybrid model, since cramped placement reduces efficiency, increases noise, and shortens compressor lifespan. Condensate drainage is part of the install, just as it is with high-efficiency tankless units, because heat pump operation pulls moisture from the air and produces water that must be drained to an approved location. The electrical service is checked to confirm it can handle the unit’s amperage, and a 240-volt dedicated circuit is typically required for proper operation. Homeowners should know that hybrid units produce a low operating hum, similar to a refrigerator compressor, which can be noticeable when the unit is installed near a bedroom or living space. We help homeowners weigh the upfront equipment cost against the long-term energy savings, including any rebates currently available from local utility providers like Atmos Energy or Oncor.
Permitting and inspection are built into every installation we perform across Burleson and the surrounding communities, and we never skip this step regardless of how routine the job appears. The City of Burleson, along with Crowley, Mansfield, Fort Worth, Cleburne, and most other municipalities we serve, requires a permit for water heater replacement under their adopted plumbing codes. We pull the permit on your behalf, schedule the inspection at a convenient time, and meet the inspector at the property to walk through the completed work and answer any questions on site. Code requirements cover items such as expansion tanks on closed plumbing systems, drip pans with proper drainage, approved venting materials and clearances, and code-compliant gas connections. Gas appliance installations carry additional rules around combustion air supply, clearances from combustibles, approved flexible connectors, and shutoff valve placement within reach of the unit. Our team tracks code updates as they happen at the state and municipal level, which keeps our installations passing inspection on the first visit nearly every time without callbacks or corrections. The final permit paperwork is provided to you for your records, and it stays attached to the property as documentation for warranty claims, insurance, and future home sales. Permitted work also protects your homeowners insurance coverage, since unpermitted appliance installations can be cited as grounds for denying claims related to water damage or fire.
After the new unit is installed and filled, we move into a thorough testing and commissioning phase rather than packing up and leaving the moment hot water arrives at the tap. Hot water is drawn from multiple fixtures throughout the home, including kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry, to confirm flow, pressure, and temperature are consistent across the entire property. Gas connections are tested with a calibrated electronic leak detector or a soap solution applied to every joint, and any bubble or alarm gets investigated and corrected before we move on. Electrical connections are verified for proper voltage, amperage, grounding, and breaker sizing using a multimeter, which prevents nuisance trips and dangerous wiring faults. We program the thermostat to a safe and efficient temperature, generally 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which prevents scalding at the tap while still controlling bacterial growth like Legionella inside the tank. The customer is then shown how to operate the unit, including how to relight a pilot if applicable, how to adjust temperature settings, and how to flush sediment from the tank or descale a tankless heat exchanger annually. Warranty paperwork is reviewed together so you understand exactly what is covered, for how long, and what maintenance the manufacturer requires to keep that warranty valid over the life of the equipment. We answer every question before packing up, leave the job site cleaner than we found it, and haul away the old water heater for proper recycling at an approved facility.

Why Hiring a Licensed Plumber for Water Heater Installation Matters in Burleson
Water heater installation involves gas, electrical, venting, and pressure components that all carry serious safety implications. Licensed plumbers in Texas train extensively on combustion safety, gas line sizing, venting requirements, and pressure relief standards. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter has held a Texas plumbing license since 2007, giving Burleson customers verified, accountable workmanship. A licensed professional sizes the unit correctly, vents it safely, and installs the required safety devices that protect your family. Unlicensed installations often skip expansion tanks, undersize gas lines, or vent improperly, creating carbon monoxide and fire risks. Licensed plumbers also pull permits and schedule inspections, which protects your home and preserves insurance coverage. Texas plumbing code addresses temperature settings, pressure relief discharge, drain pan requirements, and seismic strapping for important safety reasons. Our crew respects every standard on every installation. Liability and bonding coverage protects your property throughout the work. Manufacturer warranties on premium water heaters typically require licensed installation to remain valid, which protects your investment. Honest unit recommendations and clear pricing come standard with our service. Choosing a licensed plumber like Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter means the water heater operates safely and delivers hot water for years.
Most Common Water Heater Installation Questions
Water heater installation covers everything from sizing and fuel type to venting, permits, and final testing. Below are the questions Burleson homeowners ask us most often before scheduling a new unit.
A standard tank water heater replacement typically takes between two and four hours from start to finish. This assumes the new unit is the same fuel type and similar size as the old one, with no major code upgrades required. Our plumbers arrive with the necessary parts, fittings, and a replacement unit ready to go. Draining the existing tank can take 20 to 30 minutes depending on sediment buildup. Disconnection, removal, and placement of the new tank follow. Connections are made with new flex lines, a fresh shutoff valve, and code-required components. Filling and purging air from the system adds another 30 minutes. Testing for leaks and verifying heating performance completes the job.
Tankless water heater installations take significantly longer, often six to eight hours or more. The venting system frequently needs to be replaced or rerouted entirely. Gas line upsizing may require pulling new pipe from the meter to the unit. Electrical work is sometimes needed for condensing or power-vented models. Wall mounting and proper anchoring add time compared to a floor-standing tank. Isolation valves and condensate drainage must be installed correctly. Programming the unit and testing flow rates from multiple fixtures finishes the project. Some installations stretch into a second day if extensive modifications are needed.
Factors that extend any installation include attic access, closet retrofits, and unexpected code violations. An old water heater in a tight closet may require careful maneuvering to remove. Attic installations involve hauling units up and down narrow staircases or pull-down ladders. If the existing flue is undersized or improperly routed, we correct it before installing the new unit. Expansion tanks, drip pans, and seismic straps are added when missing. We give you an honest time estimate before starting based on what we see during the assessment. Surprises are rare because we evaluate the site carefully. Our goal is to finish the job correctly, not just quickly.
Water heater installation costs vary based on the type of unit, fuel source, and complexity of the job. A standard 40 or 50 gallon gas or electric tank replacement typically falls in the lower range. Tankless installations cost more due to the equipment price and additional venting work. High-efficiency condensing units and heat pump models sit at the higher end of the price spectrum. Labor includes removal of the old unit, disposal fees, permits, and code upgrades. We provide a flat-rate quote upfront so there are no surprises. Honest pricing is part of our reputation, and we never pressure homeowners into bigger units than they need. Financing options are available for qualified customers.
The brand and capacity of the new unit also affect total cost. Standard residential tank models from major manufacturers offer good value with six to twelve year warranties. Premium models include features like enhanced insulation, digital controls, and longer warranties. Tankless brands vary widely in price based on flow rate and efficiency rating. Heat pump water heaters cost more upfront but offer significant energy savings over time. We help you weigh the upfront cost against expected lifespan and utility savings. Rebates from local utility providers can offset some installation costs. Our team walks through every option without sales pressure.
Code-required upgrades sometimes add to the project cost. Older homes may need a new drip pan, expansion tank, or upsized gas line. Venting modifications are common when switching from atmospheric to power-vented or tankless units. Electrical work may be needed for hybrid or condensing tankless models. Earthquake straps are not typically required in Texas, but seismic considerations apply in certain installations. Permits add a modest fee, but they protect your investment and your home’s resale value. We itemize every cost in writing before work begins. You always know what you are paying for and why.
Sizing a water heater depends on the number of people in your home and your peak hot water usage. A household of one or two typically does well with a 30 to 40 gallon tank. Three or four people usually require a 40 to 50 gallon unit. Larger families with multiple bathrooms often need a 50 to 75 gallon tank or a tankless system. The first-hour rating on a tank water heater tells you how much hot water it can deliver in 60 minutes. We calculate your peak demand based on simultaneous showers, dishwashers, and washing machines. Bathtub size also affects sizing, since soaking tubs can drain a small tank quickly.
Tankless water heaters are sized by flow rate measured in gallons per minute. A single shower needs about 2 to 2.5 gallons per minute of hot water. Running two showers at once requires roughly 5 gallons per minute of capacity. Adding a dishwasher or washing machine increases the total demand. The required temperature rise affects how much flow a tankless unit can deliver. In North Texas, incoming groundwater is cooler in winter than in summer, which lowers tankless output during cold months. We size units to handle the worst-case winter scenario, not just summer averages. This prevents lukewarm showers in January.
Future household changes should also factor into sizing. A growing family will need more hot water in five years than today. Planned additions like a guest bathroom or master suite remodel affect demand. If you entertain frequently or have multiple generations under one roof, larger capacity makes sense. Conversely, an empty-nester couple may downsize to a smaller, more efficient unit. We ask about your habits, family size, and future plans before recommending equipment. The right size saves money on both energy bills and unnecessary capacity. Our recommendations are based on your needs, not sales targets.
Yes, converting from a tank to a tankless water heater is possible in most Burleson homes. The switch offers benefits like unlimited hot water on demand, longer equipment lifespan, and reduced standby energy loss. However, the conversion is more than a simple swap. Tankless units have higher BTU demands, which often requires upsizing the gas line from the meter to the unit. Venting must be replaced with stainless steel or PVC depending on the model. Wall mounting requires structural support and proper clearances. Electrical service may need to be added for condensing or power-vented models.
Location matters when planning a tankless conversion. Many homeowners prefer to install the new unit outdoors or in a garage to free up interior space. Exterior-rated models handle Texas weather well, including occasional hard freezes. Interior installations require approved venting through an exterior wall or roof. Condensate drains must be routed to an acceptable location for condensing models. Access to the gas meter and electrical panel affects the routing of new lines. Our plumbers evaluate every option and recommend the best location for performance and serviceability. Future maintenance access is part of the decision.
Cost is a major consideration when comparing tank to tankless. The equipment itself costs more, and installation typically runs higher due to gas, electrical, and venting work. Energy savings over time can offset the initial investment, especially with high-efficiency condensing units. Tankless heaters often last 20 years or more with proper maintenance, compared to 8 to 12 years for tank models. Rebates from gas providers can reduce the upfront cost. We help you calculate the long-term value based on your usage patterns. Some homeowners benefit greatly from the switch, while others are better served by a high-efficiency tank. Our recommendations reflect your actual needs.
Standard tank water heaters typically last 8 to 12 years in the Burleson area. Hard water and sediment buildup are the main factors that shorten lifespan in North Texas. Tankless units can last 20 years or more with regular maintenance. Heat pump water heaters fall in between, usually 10 to 15 years. The anode rod inside a tank is designed to corrode in place of the tank itself. Replacing the anode rod every three to five years can significantly extend tank life. Flushing sediment annually also helps both tank and tankless units perform longer. Maintenance is the single biggest factor in extending water heater life.
Water quality plays a major role in equipment longevity. Burleson and the surrounding Tarrant and Johnson County areas have moderately hard water. Calcium and magnesium deposits build up inside tanks and on tankless heat exchangers over time. A water softener can dramatically extend the life of any water heater. Without softening, tankless units may need descaling every one to two years. Tank units suffer from sediment that insulates the burner from the water, reducing efficiency. Regular flushing removes this buildup before it damages the tank. We discuss water treatment options during installation.
Warning signs that a water heater is nearing end of life include rust-colored hot water, popping or rumbling sounds, and reduced hot water capacity. Leaks around the base or from connections indicate corrosion or failing components. A sudden increase in energy bills can signal declining efficiency. Hot water that runs out faster than it used to often means sediment buildup or a failing dip tube. If your unit is older than 10 years and showing these signs, planned replacement is smarter than emergency replacement. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter offers honest assessments without pressure. Catching problems early prevents flooding and water damage.
Yes, the City of Burleson and most surrounding municipalities require permits for water heater installation. Permits ensure the work meets current plumbing, mechanical, and fuel gas codes. They also protect homeowners by requiring a licensed contractor to perform the installation. The inspection process verifies that connections, venting, and safety devices are installed correctly. Many homeowners are unaware of permit requirements until they sell their home and the lack of permits becomes a problem. Pulling a permit also keeps your homeowners insurance valid in case of a leak or fire. We handle all permitting as part of our standard installation service.
The permit process typically takes a day or two to complete. We submit the application to the local building department on your behalf. Some cities allow same-day permits for straightforward replacements. Inspections are scheduled after the installation is complete and the unit is operational. Our plumber meets the inspector on site to walk through the work. Any items flagged are corrected immediately, though our installations rarely require corrections. The inspector signs off, and you receive a final approval that becomes part of your property record. This documentation matters for future sales and insurance claims.
Permit fees vary by city but are generally modest. The City of Burleson, Crowley, Mansfield, Fort Worth, and other municipalities each have their own fee schedules. We include permitting costs in our upfront quote so there are no surprises. Skipping a permit might save a small amount upfront, but it creates significant risks down the line. Insurance companies can deny claims if the work was unpermitted. Buyers and inspectors flag unpermitted work during home sales. Code enforcement can require retroactive permits and inspections, sometimes with penalties. Doing it right the first time is always the better path.
Gas water heaters use a burner at the base of the tank to heat the water. They typically recover faster, meaning they can reheat a tank of hot water more quickly than electric models. Gas units require a gas line connection, proper venting for combustion byproducts, and combustion air. Operating costs are usually lower in areas where natural gas is affordable, including the Burleson area. Tank gas heaters cost more upfront than basic electric models but often pay back through lower energy bills. They continue working during power outages if the pilot or igniter can operate without electricity. Atmospheric venting is common, though power-vented models offer flexibility in placement.
Electric water heaters use one or two heating elements submerged in the tank. They are simpler to install since they only require an electrical connection and water lines. No venting is needed, which makes them easier to place in interior closets or tight spaces. Upfront costs are typically lower, and the equipment has fewer moving parts. Recovery time is slower than gas, so household demand should match tank capacity carefully. Operating costs depend on local electric rates, which fluctuate seasonally. Electric units do not produce combustion byproducts, so there is no carbon monoxide risk. They cannot operate during power outages.
Choosing between gas and electric depends on your home’s existing infrastructure and your usage patterns. Homes already plumbed for gas usually stick with gas for cost and recovery reasons. Homes without gas service face significant expense to add a gas line for a single appliance. Electric units make sense in all-electric homes or where venting is difficult. Heat pump electric models offer significantly better efficiency than standard electric, narrowing the cost gap with gas. We evaluate your situation and recommend the best fit. The decision is based on your home, not on what we want to sell. Our team explains the pros and cons of each option clearly.
Yes, water heaters can rupture or explode when safety devices fail or are missing. The temperature and pressure relief valve, called a T&P valve, is the most critical safety component. It opens automatically if the tank pressure or temperature exceeds safe limits. A missing, blocked, or improperly installed T&P valve removes the only line of defense against catastrophic failure. Improper venting on gas units can cause backdrafting, which leads to carbon monoxide buildup and combustion problems. Gas leaks at connections create fire and explosion hazards. Licensed plumbers install these components correctly every time.
Sediment buildup at the bottom of a tank can also create dangerous conditions. As sediment hardens, it insulates the bottom of the tank from the water above. The burner continues firing to reach the thermostat setting, but the tank overheats locally. This can lead to tank failure, hot water blasting out, or in extreme cases, a steam explosion. Regular flushing prevents this scenario. Tankless units have their own safety concerns, including gas pressure issues and venting problems. Proper installation eliminates these risks. We follow manufacturer specifications and code requirements on every job.
Annual inspection helps catch problems before they become dangerous. The T&P valve should be tested by lifting the lever and watching for water flow. Burner flames on gas units should be steady and blue, not yellow or wavering. Soot around the burner area or vent indicates incomplete combustion. Strange noises like popping or rumbling suggest sediment buildup. Any signs of leaking, rust, or corrosion warrant a service call. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter inspects safety components during every installation and service visit. Your safety is the foundation of every job we do.
