Our Service

Dependable Garbage Disposal Installation Service in Burleson, TX

The right disposal turns food scraps into a non-issue, grinding waste cleanly and sending it through the drain without complaint. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter handles disposal installations throughout Burleson, TX, for everyday kitchens, busy family homes, and small commercial break rooms. Our team starts by talking through how the kitchen actually gets used, since cooking habits drive the right choice of motor strength and grind chamber capacity. Households that prep heavy vegetables, bones, or fibrous foods often need stronger models with multi-stage grinding components. Lighter usage and tighter under-sink cabinets sometimes call for a more compact unit. We inspect the existing trap, branch tailpiece, and dishwasher connection before pulling the new disposal from the box. Old units come out cleanly, with the mounting assembly fully removed and the sink flange checked for damage. Fresh plumber’s putty or a quality gasket creates a watertight seal at the basin opening, depending on the sink material. The new mounting ring locks into place evenly, and the disposal twists onto it with a positive engagement. Drain piping is cut, slip-fit, and aligned to match the trap arm without creating stress on the housing. The dishwasher knockout is removed when needed, and the connection point is secured with a proper clamp. Power supply wiring is matched at the terminal block or hardwired junction, with the strain relief tightened to hold the cord steady. We verify ground continuity and confirm the reset switch responds correctly before activating the unit. Initial testing runs cold water through the chamber while we drop in a small amount of food waste to check grind quality, drainage, and noise level. Pricing is shared in plain numbers up front, and we leave the cabinet floor cleaner than we found it. Since 2007, Burleson kitchens have counted on our team for disposal installs that just work.

CHRIS & BRODY great team, in/out same day, very professional, very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, clean, clean, clean. Explained steps, Communicated proficiently, let Granny hover, & watch, I'm not easy client for any professional. The only thing I wish warranty was minimum 90 days, but I've used, & trusted 1960's plumbing issues, since 2015. We learned to do both roof top clean outs 100 feet minimum for tree roots backing up toilet paper, we only use cheap Scott very thin toilet paper if we don't want more than 1X year clean out. We are seniors, fixed income, every plumbing emergency comes out of food budget. We eat beans & corn bread when we have plumbing issues. God Bless Curly's BIG BLADE PLUMBING Out of Cleburne, Texas. Denise & Christy answer phones, very polite, always helpful, Denise will get you on schedule as soon as possible, never waited very long especially in sewage backups. I always ask for clean, knowledgeable, experienced plumbers. I don't hesitate to call CURLY'S BIG BLADE PLUMBING.

Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter came out to fix an incoming water line that was leaking in between two bushes. The previous company had quoted a higher price and wanted to remove the bushes and replace the shut off valve, which was still good. Big Blade Plumbing fixed the leak for a much cheaper price and didn’t remove any bushes. For that I give them 5 Stars.

After having a different company come out and price gouge me and calling around I couldn’t find anybody to help me with my clogged line, I was parked at a gas station and saw BIG BLADE truck drive by so I got out my phone and called, I was greeted on the phone by Denise who was extremely polite and professional, with no high pressure in setting the appointment. The price was extremely fair and affordable so we went ahead and booked an appointment, Hershel and Dylan arrived promptly like within 30-40 minutes of us calling and setting the appointment, they got here and did exactly what they said they were going to without pressuring me into getting other services they executed the repair so fast and explained to me about my 30 day warranty and potential risks to look out for in the future! I would HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND using this service. Amazing job thank you guys so much for you’re help and relieving me of all the stress that comes with plumbing difficulties!

Garbage Disposal Installation Service

Selecting the right garbage disposal for a specific kitchen requires more thought than many homeowners give to the decision, and the consequences of the wrong choice show up daily for the next decade. Horsepower ratings range from 1/3 horsepower entry-level units to 1 horsepower or more on commercial-grade residential models, and the difference in real-world performance is substantial. Lower horsepower units work fine for light household use with mostly soft food waste, while higher horsepower handles tougher items like fibrous vegetables, small bones from chicken, and larger volumes of waste more effectively. Continuous feed disposals operate while material is being added, controlled by a wall switch that runs the unit during use, and this is the configuration most homeowners are familiar with. Batch feed models require a stopper to be inserted before operation, which adds a safety feature for households with small children but requires more steps during normal everyday use. Sound insulation varies significantly between models, with premium units running noticeably quieter than basic versions, and the difference becomes important in open-concept kitchens where the disposal noise affects the entire living space. Stainless steel grinding components resist corrosion and wear far better than the galvanized components found in cheaper units, which directly affects how long the disposal will serve before replacement becomes necessary. Auto-reverse features in some models change direction periodically to prevent jamming, while anti-jam systems and overload protection extend unit life by preventing damage from typical operating problems. Our plumbers help homeowners evaluate options based on actual cooking patterns rather than marketing claims, because matching the disposal to the household is part of doing the job right.

Existing kitchen conditions significantly affect how a disposal installation proceeds, and we evaluate them carefully before recommending any specific approach. The sink drain configuration must accommodate the disposal mounting flange, with most modern sinks designed to accept standard disposal connections without modification. Older sinks sometimes have non-standard drain openings that require additional adapters or fittings to create a proper seal at the flange. The under-sink cabinet must have adequate space for the disposal body, which varies in height and width between models from compact units for tight cabinets to full-sized commercial-grade models. Garbage disposals occupy more vertical space than standard drain assemblies, sometimes requiring relocation of stored items, cleaning supplies, or even shelves to make room. The dishwasher drain connection, when present, must be routed through the disposal’s dishwasher inlet or through alternative arrangements that meet code in the local jurisdiction. Electrical service to the disposal location must be available through either a switched outlet, a hardwired connection, or installation of new wiring if no power exists at the location. Drain pipe sizing should match the disposal discharge requirements, with 1-1/2 inch drain pipes being the standard for residential installations. Cabinet bottoms in older kitchens occasionally show water damage from prior leaks that needs addressing before the new disposal goes in. Our team evaluates all these conditions during the initial visit and discusses any modifications needed with the homeowner before purchasing the new equipment.

Electrical connections for garbage disposals require careful attention to both safety and code compliance, and we never cut corners on this portion of the work. Most disposals operate on standard 120-volt household current and connect either through a power cord plugged into an under-sink outlet or through direct hardwiring to electrical service. Switched outlets controlled by wall switches above the counter are the most common arrangement and allow safe disposal operation while keeping wiring accessible for service and future replacement. GFCI protection is required for outlets in kitchen locations under current electrical code, which protects users from shock hazards in the moist environment that kitchens present. Disposals shipped without power cords require either purchase of a separate cord kit and conversion to plug-in operation or direct hardwiring by an electrician depending on local code preferences. Existing kitchen wiring sometimes needs upgrades to accommodate disposal installation, particularly in older Burleson homes with outdated electrical systems that lack GFCI protection or dedicated kitchen circuits. Switch operation should be tested to confirm the wall switch actually controls the disposal outlet rather than some other circuit, since older homes sometimes have mismatched wiring from past renovations. Our team handles plug-in installations directly and coordinates with electricians when hardwiring or circuit modifications are needed for the project. Safety is non-negotiable on any electrical work, and we never cut corners on connections that affect user protection.

Mounting the disposal to the sink begins with the sink flange that creates the critical seal between the sink and the disposal body. The mounting flange installs through the sink drain opening from above and seals with plumber’s putty or appropriate gasket material against the sink to prevent water from leaking past the flange into the cabinet below. The mounting ring and gasket assembly secures beneath the sink with the snap ring and other hardware specific to each manufacturer’s design, and proper assembly order matters significantly. Proper torque on mounting fasteners creates a leak-free seal without overtightening that could damage the sink, the flange, or the disposal mounting components themselves. Different manufacturers use different mounting systems, including InSinkErator’s traditional three-bolt mount and Waste King’s snap-on EZ-Mount design, and each requires specific techniques for proper installation. Following manufacturer instructions ensures proper installation and maintains warranty coverage that the homeowner has paid for through the purchase price. Sealing material at the flange must form a complete seal around the entire perimeter to prevent leaks that can damage the cabinet over time without being immediately visible. The disposal body then attaches to the mounting hardware through whatever method the manufacturer specifies, typically with a twist-lock motion that engages the snap ring or mounting tabs. Testing the seal by filling the sink with water before continuing with discharge plumbing catches mounting issues early when corrections are simple rather than after the entire installation is complete.

Discharge plumbing connects the disposal to the existing drain system through several components that must be installed correctly to prevent leaks and ensure proper flow. The discharge tube from the disposal connects to either a tailpiece or directly to the P-trap depending on the cabinet configuration and the geometry of the existing plumbing. Double-bowl sinks require special attention because the disposal serves only one bowl while the other bowl drains through its own separate path before joining the disposal discharge. The two drain paths typically combine at a continuous waste fitting before entering the P-trap, with appropriate fittings sized for the flow capacity needed by both bowls during simultaneous use. Air gap requirements vary by jurisdiction, with some areas requiring physical air gaps mounted on the sink deck or counter while others accept high-loop installations under the cabinet. The dishwasher drain hose connects to the disposal’s dishwasher inlet, which has a removable knockout plug that protects the inlet during shipping. Forgetting to remove this plug is a common installation error that causes dishwashers to back up the first time they run after the new disposal is installed. Slope of all drain components must allow proper flow without creating belly sections that trap water and cause future problems with drainage and odors. Code compliance on drain assembly affects both function and inspection approval, which matters for resale and insurance purposes.

Testing the completed installation under load confirms everything works correctly before we consider the job done and leave the property. Water flows from the faucet through the disposal with the unit running, simulating normal use patterns and verifying that the grinding chamber accepts and discharges material properly. The grinding chamber, mounting connections, and discharge plumbing are all inspected for any sign of leakage during operation under realistic conditions rather than just at rest. The disposal runs continuously for several minutes to verify motor operation and listen for any unusual sounds that might indicate installation problems. The reset button is identified and the homeowner is shown how to use it during future jamming events, which prevents unnecessary service calls for problems they can resolve themselves. The hex key or service wrench that fits the bottom of the disposal is left with the homeowner for clearing jams manually when the motor refuses to start, along with explanation of how to use it safely with power disconnected. Dishwasher operation is verified by running a quick cycle to confirm proper drainage through the disposal connection rather than backing up into the dishwasher tub. Safety features including the splash guard, removable baffle, and any anti-jam systems are demonstrated and explained so the homeowner understands how to use them. The homeowner is walked through normal operation, what to avoid putting through the disposal, and basic maintenance practices that extend the unit’s service life.

Common installation challenges affect timing and require professional handling to keep the project on track. Old disposal removal can be difficult when years of service have created mineral buildup or corrosion at mounting points, particularly with older InSinkErator three-bolt mounts that have not been disturbed in a decade or more. Disconnecting the old disposal from the drain plumbing sometimes requires cutting pipes that have fused due to age and use, which means the homeowner needs replacement plumbing components installed during the same visit. Electrical work in older kitchens may reveal wiring that does not meet current code, requiring repairs before the new disposal can be safely connected and energized for normal use. Sink drain configurations occasionally need modification to accommodate different disposal mounting systems between brands, particularly when switching from one major manufacturer to another. Cabinet damage from previous leaks or installations may need addressing before the new unit can be properly mounted, and ignoring such damage shortens the new installation’s effective life. Plumbing modifications under the sink to accommodate the new disposal’s discharge requirements sometimes affect adjacent connections, requiring more extensive work than initially planned. Hard water mineral deposits common in Burleson homes accumulate inside aging drain assemblies and complicate removal of old components. Our team handles these complications efficiently and communicates clearly with the homeowner about any unexpected requirements that emerge during the work, because surprises at invoice time are not how we operate.

Our Service

Why Hiring a Licensed Plumber for Garbage Disposal Installation Matters in Burleson

Garbage disposal installation involves drain plumbing, electrical connections, and tight seals that all must work together correctly. Licensed plumbers in Texas study drain configurations, venting requirements, and the proper integration of dishwasher discharge lines. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter has held a Texas plumbing license since 2007, bringing accountable expertise to every Burleson kitchen. A licensed professional knows how to align the disposal with the P-trap to prevent siphoning, slow drainage, and recurring clogs. Unlicensed installations often skip the dishwasher knockout plug, flood cabinets, or leave loose mounting rings that drip for weeks. Licensed plumbers also confirm the unit is grounded properly and that the electrical hookup meets safety standards. Texas plumbing code addresses air gaps, high loops, and discharge fittings that protect your drinking water from contamination. Our crew respects those standards on every installation. Liability coverage protects your cabinets, flooring, and appliances if anything unexpected happens. Manufacturer warranties on disposals often require licensed installation to remain valid over time. Honest sizing advice and upfront pricing come standard with our service. Choosing a licensed plumber like Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter means the disposal runs smoothly, drains cleanly, and lasts for years.

Most Common Garbage Disposal Installation Questions

Garbage disposal installation involves details that affect both immediate performance and long-term reliability. Below are the questions Burleson homeowners ask most often before scheduling a new disposal installation.

A standard garbage disposal installation typically takes one to two hours from arrival to cleanup, assuming reasonable access and no significant complications. Replacing an existing disposal of the same brand and similar configuration often falls at the shorter end of this range. Installing a disposal in a kitchen that previously had no disposal takes longer because of the additional drain modifications and potentially electrical work required. Switching between different brands of disposal sometimes requires modifications to mounting hardware or drain connections. Different horsepower units occasionally have different physical dimensions that affect installation complexity. Total time includes removal of any existing unit, installation of the new disposal, and full testing under load.

Several factors can extend installation time beyond the standard range. Aged drain plumbing under the sink sometimes needs replacement during the installation because of corrosion, damage, or incompatibility with the new disposal. Old shutoff valves that fail to close properly require replacement before the installation can proceed safely. Electrical work for new circuits, GFCI protection, or dedicated outlets adds significant time and may require coordination with an electrician. Cabinet damage discovered during installation, particularly water damage from previous leaks, may need addressing before the new disposal can be properly mounted. Dishwasher drain modifications, particularly when adding a disposal to a kitchen that did not have one previously, require careful coordination of multiple drain connections. Custom or specialty sinks sometimes require non-standard installation techniques that extend the project.

Multiple disposals or related kitchen plumbing work during the same visit benefits from efficiency gains. Replacing both the disposal and related plumbing fixtures together makes sense when multiple items are aging or failing. Combined service often qualifies for package pricing that saves compared to separate visits. Our team handles complete kitchen plumbing updates when homeowners want comprehensive work done in one visit. Coordinating with other plumbing service during the same trip, such as faucet replacement or drain cleaning, maximizes the value of the visit. Realistic time estimates are provided during scheduling so homeowners can plan accordingly. The standard installation usually completes within a normal service window, while complex situations are explained upfront to set proper expectations.

Garbage disposal installation costs depend on the type of unit, the complexity of the installation, and any electrical or plumbing modifications required. Standard installation of a basic disposal replacing an existing unit typically falls at the lower end of the price spectrum. Installing a disposal in a kitchen without an existing unit costs more because of the additional drain modifications and possibly electrical work involved. Higher horsepower or premium disposal models cost more for the equipment itself, though installation labor remains similar across brands. We provide flat-rate pricing upfront so the homeowner knows the total cost before authorizing the work.

The cost of the disposal itself varies considerably between models. Entry-level 1/3 horsepower disposals from major manufacturers start at modest prices and serve light residential use adequately. Mid-range 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower units offer better grinding power, more durable components, and longer warranties at higher price points. Premium 1 horsepower disposals with stainless steel components, advanced sound insulation, and extended warranties cost considerably more but provide commercial-grade performance for heavy use. Specialty features including anti-jam systems, auto-reverse, and extended sound insulation add cost while delivering value for households that benefit from them. Our team can install disposals the homeowner has purchased or supply units from our trusted suppliers as part of the installation. Each approach has tradeoffs, and we discuss the options openly.

Additional services discovered during installation can affect the final cost. Electrical work for new circuits, dedicated outlets, or GFCI protection requires coordination with an electrician and adds to the total project cost. Replacement of failed shutoff valves under the sink adds modest cost but is often necessary for safe installation. New supply lines, when needed, are typically included in our standard installation pricing. Drain plumbing modifications beyond simple disposal connection, including replacing damaged P-traps, tailpieces, or branch drain lines, may be needed depending on existing conditions. Any unexpected issues discovered during the work are discussed with the homeowner before additional charges accumulate. Transparent communication about pricing during the work prevents surprises at invoice time. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter has built our reputation on honest pricing since 2007.

Disposal sizing focuses primarily on horsepower, which determines grinding capability and how the unit handles different types of food waste. A 1/3 horsepower disposal works adequately for light household use, typically a couple or small family that primarily uses the disposal for soft food scraps. These entry-level units handle banana peels, soft vegetables, and small amounts of typical food waste but struggle with tougher items. They tend to jam more easily and have shorter service lives than higher horsepower units. The price advantage of 1/3 horsepower units shrinks once their shorter lifespan and increased service needs are considered.

A 1/2 horsepower disposal represents the entry point into more capable units that handle typical family use well. These mid-range units manage most common food waste including some tougher items, with adequate grinding power for daily cooking. The mid-range size is the most common installation in average residential settings because it balances cost, capacity, and durability effectively. Most major manufacturers offer well-built 1/2 horsepower units with reasonable warranties and good service reputations. Households cooking three or more meals daily, families with multiple cooks, or kitchens that process significant vegetable waste benefit from this size or larger.

Higher horsepower units, including 3/4 and 1 horsepower models, suit heavy use, larger households, and cooking patterns that produce substantial food waste. These units grind tougher materials including some fibrous vegetables, small bones from poultry, and larger quantities of waste without jamming. Stainless steel grinding components in premium units resist corrosion and wear better than galvanized components in cheaper models. Sound insulation typically improves significantly at higher price points, with premium 1 horsepower units running noticeably quieter than basic models. Households that entertain frequently, families with avid home cooks, and kitchens supporting multiple generations benefit from the additional capacity. Our team helps homeowners evaluate actual usage patterns and matches disposal sizing to genuine needs rather than upselling unnecessary capacity.

Garbage disposal installation falls within reach of many homeowners with mechanical aptitude and the right tools, though several factors make professional installation often the wiser choice. Basic installation involves removing the existing drain assembly or disposal, installing the new mounting flange, securing the disposal body, connecting the discharge plumbing, and making the electrical connections. Manufacturers provide detailed instructions and most homeowners can follow them with reasonable success. Hand tools, plumber’s putty, a screwdriver, and adjustable wrenches handle most of the work. The mechanical aspect of mounting the disposal is straightforward for someone comfortable working under a sink.

Several factors complicate do-it-yourself installation. Electrical connections require either an existing properly wired outlet or modifications that should be made by licensed electricians. Hardwiring disposals to direct electrical service is dangerous when handled improperly and may violate local code. Plumbing modifications under the sink, particularly when adding a disposal to a kitchen that did not previously have one, often involve more complex work than simple replacement. Drain assembly errors can cause sewer gas leaks, dishwasher drainage problems, or chronic clogs that affect kitchen function. Mounting flange installations that fail to seal properly cause persistent leaks that damage cabinets and other under-sink components. Forgetting to remove the dishwasher inlet plug, a common DIY error, prevents proper dishwasher drainage and can damage the dishwasher.

The case for professional installation rests on several practical considerations. The cost of professional installation is reasonable compared to the cost of correcting installation errors, particularly those involving water damage or electrical issues. Licensed plumbers carry the right parts, tools, and experience to handle complications that surprise do-it-yourself installers. Warranty coverage on disposals may require professional installation for some terms to remain valid. Code compliance on plumbing and electrical work matters for safety, insurance, and resale purposes. Our team handles disposal installations as part of routine service throughout Burleson, and most installations complete efficiently when handled by experienced plumbers. The peace of mind of professional installation often justifies the cost, particularly for homeowners who are not comfortable with under-sink plumbing or electrical work. Some homeowners enjoy doing their own installations and have the tools and experience to handle them well, while others prefer to have professionals handle the work.

Quality garbage disposals from major manufacturers typically deliver 8 to 15 years of reliable service when properly used and maintained. Entry-level 1/3 horsepower units tend toward the shorter end of this range because their lower-quality components wear faster under typical use. Mid-range 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower units commonly serve 10 to 12 years before requiring replacement. Premium 1 horsepower units with stainless steel components and superior construction can deliver 15 or more years of service. Lifetime warranties on some premium models indicate manufacturer confidence in long service life, though specific warranty terms vary considerably between brands and models.

Several factors significantly affect actual service life. Use patterns matter substantially, with frequent use of harder materials and larger volumes accelerating wear on all components. Putting non-food items down the disposal damages grinding components and shortens service life considerably. Hard water in Burleson and surrounding areas contributes to mineral buildup that can affect both grinding components and motor performance over time. Power surges from lightning, utility issues, or improper electrical connections can damage motor components and electronics. Running the disposal without water, even briefly, causes excessive friction and heat that accelerates wear. Allowing items the manufacturer recommends against, including coffee grounds, bones, fruit pits, and fibrous vegetables, contributes to premature failure.

Maintenance practices affect disposal longevity meaningfully. Running cold water during operation and for several seconds after grinding stops flushes residue through the discharge plumbing and prevents buildup. Avoiding caustic chemical drain cleaners protects the disposal components from chemical damage. Periodic grinding of ice cubes helps clean grinding components and sharpens cutting surfaces somewhat. Citrus peels run through the disposal periodically help freshen the unit while cleaning interior surfaces. Avoiding hot water during normal operation prevents grease and fat from coating internal components in liquid form. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter provides maintenance recommendations during installation and ongoing service. Following manufacturer guidelines for use and care extends disposal life significantly. Some disposals deliver many years of service beyond expected lifespan when used and maintained properly, while others fail prematurely from misuse.

Foods that work well in disposals include soft fruits and vegetables, small bits of meat without bones, cooked vegetables, citrus peels in moderation, and small amounts of typical food scraps. The disposal grinds these materials effectively without strain on the motor or grinding components. Soft, easily ground items represent the intended use case for residential disposals. Running adequate water during and after grinding ensures the material flows through the discharge plumbing without leaving residue. Most everyday cooking scraps fall safely within disposal capabilities when used in reasonable quantities.

Several categories of items should never go down a garbage disposal regardless of horsepower or claims about heavy-duty capability. Fibrous vegetables including celery, corn husks, artichokes, and asparagus can wrap around disposal components and cause jams or motor damage. Starchy items including pasta, rice, potato peels, and beans expand with water and can create dense masses that block plumbing downstream. Coffee grounds may grind fine enough to pass the disposal but accumulate in plumbing traps and cause persistent clogs. Bones from chicken, pork chops, or other meats damage grinding components and exceed what residential disposals can handle. Fruit pits including peach, plum, cherry, and avocado pits are essentially small rocks that damage grinding components. Grease, fats, and cooking oils solidify in cooler downstream plumbing and cause major clogs even when they pass the disposal initially.

Non-food items absolutely should not enter the disposal under any circumstances. Plastic, metal, glass, paper, and other non-food items can damage the disposal beyond economical repair. Cleaning sponges, scrub pads, and similar items can wrap around components or jam the motor. Eggshells produce membranes that can wrap around components even though the shells themselves grind. Onion skins and similar thin membranes can pass the grinding but create problems downstream. Hot grease and oils should be collected in disposable containers and discarded with trash rather than poured down any drain, including the disposal. Cleaning products and chemicals can damage internal components and create reactions with food residue. Educating all household members about proper disposal use prevents the most common causes of disposal damage and clogs. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter responds to many disposal failures that trace directly to improper use, and we share usage guidelines during every installation.

A disposal that suddenly stops responding to the wall switch typically indicates either a tripped reset button on the unit or an electrical issue. The reset button on the bottom of most disposals pops out when the motor overheats or overloads, cutting power to protect the unit from damage. Pressing the reset button firmly restores power once the motor has cooled. The button typically resets with a clicking sound when properly engaged. If the unit still does not respond after resetting, the breaker for the circuit may have tripped, requiring reset at the electrical panel. GFCI outlets that have tripped also cut power and need resetting before the disposal will operate. These simple troubleshooting steps resolve many disposal problems without professional service.

A disposal that hums but does not turn typically indicates a jam preventing the grinding components from rotating. The hex key or service wrench that fits the bottom of most disposals allows manual rotation to break jams loose. Turning off the power at the wall switch or breaker before attempting to clear a jam prevents accidental motor startup during the work. The wrench fits into a socket on the bottom of the disposal and rotates the grinding components back and forth to free whatever is causing the jam. Looking down into the disposal with a flashlight, with power off, may reveal the jamming item that can be removed with tongs or pliers. Never insert fingers into a disposal even when power is off. Once the jam is cleared, the reset button typically needs to be pressed and power restored before normal operation resumes.

Some disposal problems require professional service. Persistent jamming after clearing attempts indicates damage to grinding components that may need professional evaluation. Motor failures, where the unit makes no sound at all even with power confirmed, typically require replacement rather than repair. Leaks from the disposal body, mounting flange, or discharge connection require professional service to identify the source and repair properly. Unusual sounds during operation, including grinding, rattling, or squealing, suggest internal damage that needs diagnosis. Strong odors that persist despite cleaning may indicate trapped debris or other issues requiring service. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter diagnoses disposal problems accurately and recommends either repair or replacement based on the specific situation. Sometimes a simple repair extends a quality disposal’s useful life by years, while sometimes replacement is the more cost-effective option.

New garbage disposals typically include a dishwasher inlet connection that accepts standard dishwasher drain hoses. The inlet is located on the upper portion of the disposal body and accommodates the 5/8 inch dishwasher drain hose common in residential installations. The drain hose connects with a hose clamp that secures the connection against leaks during dishwasher operation. Most modern dishwashers route their drain through the disposal, which provides convenient discharge into the same plumbing serving the kitchen sink. The connection allows the disposal to grind any food particles that pass through the dishwasher filter before they reach the main drain.

A common installation error involves the knockout plug at the dishwasher inlet on new disposals. The plug protects the inlet during shipping and must be removed before connecting the dishwasher drain hose. The plug is typically inside the inlet and requires careful removal with a hammer and screwdriver, with the loose plug falling into the disposal body where it must be retrieved before installation continues. Forgetting to remove this plug is one of the most common installation errors and causes dishwasher backups during the first use after installation. The plug prevents dishwasher water from entering the disposal, with the water having nowhere to go except back into the dishwasher. Removing the plug during installation prevents this frustrating problem.

Air gap requirements vary by jurisdiction for dishwasher drain connections. Some local codes require physical air gaps mounted on the sink deck or countertop, with the dishwasher drain hose running through the air gap before connecting to the disposal. Other jurisdictions accept high-loop installations where the drain hose loops up to a high point under the counter before descending to the disposal connection. The air gap or high loop prevents contaminated water from flowing back into the dishwasher during sink drainage. Our team installs the correct configuration for the specific local code requirements applicable to the property. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter coordinates dishwasher connections during disposal installation as standard practice. Customers do not need to handle the dishwasher portion of the work separately when we are already installing the disposal. The complete installation includes proper drain integration for both fixtures.
