Sump Pump Installation

Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter installs sump pumps throughout Burleson, TX, protecting homes from groundwater and basement flooding with reliable equipment, proper discharge plumbing, and code-compliant installation.

Our Service

Dependable Sump Pump Installation Service in Burleson, TX

Water finds its way into the lowest part of a property, and without a working sump pump in place, that water lingers and causes damage. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter installs sump pump systems throughout Burleson, TX, for crawl spaces, partial basements, foundation perimeters, and yards where standing water becomes a regular problem during storms. Our team walks the property first, identifying where water collects and what is feeding the accumulation. The sump basin location is chosen to capture incoming water at the lowest point, with gravel surround sized to allow groundwater to enter the basin freely. Pump capacity is selected based on the volume of water expected during heavy rain events, factoring in vertical lift to the discharge point and total run length. Submersible models suit most residential applications, since they run quieter and stay cooler under continuous use, while pedestal units fit specific situations where a longer service life matters more than noise level. Discharge piping is routed to an approved exterior location well away from the foundation, never tied into the sanitary sewer where code prohibits it. A check valve prevents backflow into the basin between pump cycles, and quiet check valves are available for installations near living spaces. Battery backup systems pair well with primary pumps, since power outages tend to arrive alongside the storms that demand pump operation most. Float switches are tested through their full travel range, and the pump is run through several full cycles before the job is considered finished. Pricing is shared in plain numbers up front. Since 2007, Burleson homeowners have trusted our crew to install sump systems that perform reliably when the weather turns.

CHRIS & BRODY great team, in/out same day, very professional, very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, clean, clean, clean. Explained steps, Communicated proficiently, let Granny hover, & watch, I'm not easy client for any professional. The only thing I wish warranty was minimum 90 days, but I've used, & trusted 1960's plumbing issues, since 2015. We learned to do both roof top clean outs 100 feet minimum for tree roots backing up toilet paper, we only use cheap Scott very thin toilet paper if we don't want more than 1X year clean out. We are seniors, fixed income, every plumbing emergency comes out of food budget. We eat beans & corn bread when we have plumbing issues. God Bless Curly's BIG BLADE PLUMBING Out of Cleburne, Texas. Denise & Christy answer phones, very polite, always helpful, Denise will get you on schedule as soon as possible, never waited very long especially in sewage backups. I always ask for clean, knowledgeable, experienced plumbers. I don't hesitate to call CURLY'S BIG BLADE PLUMBING.

Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter came out to fix an incoming water line that was leaking in between two bushes. The previous company had quoted a higher price and wanted to remove the bushes and replace the shut off valve, which was still good. Big Blade Plumbing fixed the leak for a much cheaper price and didn’t remove any bushes. For that I give them 5 Stars.

After having a different company come out and price gouge me and calling around I couldn’t find anybody to help me with my clogged line, I was parked at a gas station and saw BIG BLADE truck drive by so I got out my phone and called, I was greeted on the phone by Denise who was extremely polite and professional, with no high pressure in setting the appointment. The price was extremely fair and affordable so we went ahead and booked an appointment, Hershel and Dylan arrived promptly like within 30-40 minutes of us calling and setting the appointment, they got here and did exactly what they said they were going to without pressuring me into getting other services they executed the repair so fast and explained to me about my 30 day warranty and potential risks to look out for in the future! Sump Pump Installation Service

Assessing whether a property actually needs a sump pump begins with understanding the specific water problems the homeowner has experienced and the conditions that create them in the first place. Some properties face groundwater intrusion from high water tables, particularly during wet seasons or after major rain events that saturate the soil around the foundation. Others deal with surface water entering basements or crawl spaces through foundation cracks, window wells, or other entry points that develop over time. Drainage problems around the foundation can direct water toward the home rather than away from it, creating recurring basement moisture issues that grow worse with each storm. Understanding the source helps determine whether a sump pump is the right solution or whether other approaches like exterior drainage improvements, foundation waterproofing, or grading changes would better address the underlying problem. Our team walks the property and discusses water history with the homeowner before recommending sump pump installation. Sometimes a sump pump is exactly the right answer, while other situations benefit more from addressing water entry rather than pumping out what does enter. Honest assessment serves the homeowner better than automatic recommendation of installation services that might not solve the actual problem.

Sizing the sump pump correctly for the specific application affects both protection during major events and equipment longevity through normal operation across the years to come. Pump capacity gets expressed in gallons per hour or gallons per minute, with residential pumps ranging from 1,800 gallons per hour for light-duty applications to 5,000 gallons per hour or more for heavy-duty installations. Properties facing high groundwater or significant water entry need higher capacity pumps that can keep up during peak conditions when water enters rapidly. Properties with occasional minor water issues do well with standard residential pumps that handle typical events comfortably without working at their limits. Head pressure, which is the vertical distance the pump must lift water plus friction losses through the discharge piping, affects effective pump capacity significantly throughout the system. Manufacturer pump curves show how capacity drops with increasing head pressure, which informs the right pump selection for the specific installation geometry. Float switch configuration, motor horsepower, and impeller design all factor into pump selection based on application requirements. Our team helps homeowners select appropriate equipment based on the actual conditions at the property rather than upselling unnecessary capacity that drives cost without benefit.

Sump pit construction provides the foundation for proper pump installation and reliable long-term operation in the property. The pit holds the pump and provides space for water to accumulate before triggering pump operation through the float switch that controls the cycle. Standard residential sump pits typically measure 18 to 24 inches in diameter and 24 to 30 inches deep, though specific applications may warrant different dimensions based on expected water volume. The pit liner provides structural support and prevents soil intrusion that would clog the pump or affect operation over time. Pre-fabricated polyethylene pit liners are the standard for modern installations because they resist corrosion and last for decades. Gravel surrounding the pit liner allows groundwater to enter the pit through perforations in the liner walls, which is how the system collects water from the surrounding soil. The pit lid covers the installation and prevents debris from entering while allowing access for service when needed. Air vents in the lid allow proper operation while sealing against radon and other gases when applicable. Our team handles complete pit construction during installations where pits do not already exist, working with the existing setup when retrofit installation is the project scope.

Discharge plumbing carries pumped water away from the home to safe disposal areas that prevent it from recirculating back to the sump pit and triggering constant pump operation. Discharge pipe diameter matches the pump outlet size to maintain proper flow capacity throughout the run. PVC piping handles most residential discharge applications well at reasonable cost and lasts for decades when properly installed. Check valves installed in the discharge line prevent water from flowing back into the pit when the pump stops, which protects both the pump and the home from backflow problems. The discharge routes through the home to an exterior termination point, typically requiring penetration through the foundation or wall at an appropriate location. Exterior discharge directs water away from the foundation through extensions or buried drainage to prevent immediate recirculation that would waste pump capacity. Some installations connect to stormwater systems where local code allows, though many jurisdictions require surface discharge to the property. Freeze protection on exterior discharge lines prevents winter blockages that would prevent pump operation during cold-weather events when the home most needs protection. Each installation receives planning for discharge routing that fits the specific property configuration.

Electrical connections for sump pumps require attention to both code compliance and reliable operation during emergencies when families depend on the system. The pump connects to a dedicated circuit with GFCI protection in most installations, providing both shock protection and circuit isolation that prevents nuisance trips affecting other appliances in the home. Plug-in pumps offer easy replacement without electrical work during future service, while hardwired pumps provide cleaner installation but require licensed electrical work for replacement. The outlet or junction box mounts above the projected water level in the pit to protect electrical components from moisture and prevent dangerous conditions. Float switch operation needs adequate vertical travel within the pit to allow proper pump cycling without short-cycling that shortens motor life significantly. Battery backup systems include their own electrical considerations for charging and operation during power outages that affect primary pumps. Coordination with electricians happens when new circuits or electrical service modifications support the sump pump installation. Our team handles plug-in installations directly and coordinates electrical work as needed for more complex installations that require dedicated circuits or service modifications.

Backup systems protect against the situations when primary sump pumps fail or when power outages prevent their operation during the events when families most need protection. Battery backup pumps install alongside primary pumps and operate when the primary fails or loses power supply. The battery charger maintains the battery during normal operation and switches to battery power automatically when needed to keep pumping. Battery sizing determines how long backup operation can continue during extended outages, with larger batteries supporting longer protection during prolonged events. Water-powered backup systems offer an alternative that uses municipal water supply pressure to pump water without electricity, which works as long as water service continues even during power outages. These systems consume substantial water during operation but provide reliable protection when grid power is unavailable for extended periods. Combination systems integrate primary, battery backup, and sometimes water-powered backup into single integrated units that provide multiple layers of protection from a single equipment installation. Our team discusses backup options during installation planning so homeowners can choose appropriate protection for their specific situation and budget. Major water events often occur during severe storms that also cause power outages, making backup systems particularly valuable.

Testing the completed installation under realistic conditions verifies everything operates correctly before the homeowner relies on the system during an actual event. Filling the pit with water tests pump activation through the float switch, pump capacity under operation, and discharge flow through the complete plumbing system from pit to exterior termination. Listening to the pump during operation identifies any unusual sounds that suggest installation problems or equipment defects worth addressing before the homeowner leaves the property. Verifying the discharge actually moves water away from the foundation confirms the complete system works as intended for its protective purpose. Checking electrical operation including any backup systems verifies redundant protection works when called upon during emergencies. The homeowner receives instruction on system operation, maintenance requirements, and how to test the system periodically themselves to confirm continued readiness. Knowing where the system controls and shutoffs are located supports emergency response if needed during future events. Documentation of the installation including equipment specifications, warranty terms, and operating instructions becomes part of the homeowner’s records for future reference. Our team takes the time needed for thorough testing rather than rushing through to the next call.

Our Service

Why Hiring a Licensed Plumber for Sump Pump Installation Matters in Burleson

Sump pump installation involves drainage planning, electrical considerations, and discharge routing that all affect long-term performance. Licensed plumbers in Texas train on water flow calculations, pump sizing, and the code rules that govern discharge locations. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter has held a Texas plumbing license since 2007, giving Burleson customers verified, accountable workmanship. A licensed professional sizes the pump correctly for your home, since an undersized unit fails during heavy rain when protection matters most. Unlicensed installations often discharge into sanitary sewers, which violates code and creates municipal fines for the homeowner. Licensed plumbers also install proper check valves, vent connections, and basin seals that keep the system working quietly and reliably. Texas plumbing code addresses backflow protection, discharge points, and electrical clearances for important safety reasons. Our crew respects every standard on every installation. Liability coverage protects your flooring, walls, and stored belongings during the work. Manufacturer warranties on premium pumps often require licensed installation to remain valid. Honest sizing recommendations and clear pricing come standard with our service. Choosing a licensed plumber like Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter means the sump pump runs when needed and protects your home for years.

Most Common Sump Pump Installation Questions

Sump pump installation raises questions for homeowners considering flood protection for their property. Below are the questions Burleson homeowners ask most often before scheduling installation.

A typical sump pump installation takes one to two days depending on whether a pit already exists at the property or new pit construction is required. Replacement installations in existing pits often complete within a few hours when the pit is suitable for the new pump and discharge plumbing is acceptable. New installations requiring pit construction take longer because the excavation, liner placement, and gravel installation add time to the project. Discharge plumbing routing through the home and out to the exterior adds time depending on the specific layout.

Several factors can extend installation timing. New circuits or electrical service modifications require coordination with electricians and add scheduling time. Discharge routing through finished spaces sometimes requires opening walls or floors for pipe installation. Backup system installation alongside the primary pump adds time for the additional equipment and electrical work. Concrete cutting or other modifications to existing slab construction extends timing for some installations.

Restoration work after installation sometimes extends overall project completion. Drywall patching, paint, and other finish work happens after the plumbing portion is complete. Coordination with restoration contractors keeps the project moving when significant finish work is needed. Realistic timelines come from initial planning rather than optimistic estimates designed to win the job. Our team communicates clearly about expected timing during initial consultation.

Sump pump installation costs vary based on equipment choices, pit construction needs, and the complexity of discharge plumbing. Replacement installations in existing pits with acceptable discharge plumbing fall at the lower end of the price range. New installations requiring pit construction, new discharge plumbing, and electrical work cost more because of the additional scope. Backup systems add equipment and labor cost beyond primary pump installation alone.

Equipment quality and capacity affect installation cost significantly. Entry-level pumps from major manufacturers handle light residential applications at modest cost. Mid-range pumps with longer warranties and better construction cost more but typically deliver better long-term value. Premium pumps with cast iron construction, switchable backup capability, or other advanced features cost considerably more while providing superior protection for properties facing serious water challenges. Our team helps homeowners select appropriate equipment based on actual needs rather than upselling unnecessary capacity.

Permit fees and inspection costs add modestly to total project price when permits apply to the installation. Electrical work for new circuits adds cost separately when needed. Restoration work for any finished surfaces affected by the installation gets handled separately by drywall and finish contractors. Financing options are available for qualified customers when comprehensive installations exceed comfortable cash outlay. Transparent pricing reflects how we have operated since 2007.

Several factors indicate whether a sump pump makes sense for a specific property. Properties with basements that have experienced flooding from groundwater intrusion benefit clearly from sump pump protection. Crawl spaces that develop standing water during wet seasons protect from sump pump installation. Homes built in areas with high water tables face ongoing groundwater pressure that sump pumps address effectively. Properties with foundation drainage systems often require sump pumps to handle the water that drainage collects.

Not every wet basement or crawl space requires a sump pump. Sometimes water entry traces to surface water problems that better solutions address. Improving exterior grading to direct water away from the foundation can eliminate basement moisture issues without requiring pumping. Repairing foundation cracks, sealing window wells, or addressing other entry points sometimes stops water entry without sump pump installation. Roof drainage that directs gutter water away from the foundation reduces hydrostatic pressure that drives groundwater entry. Our team evaluates the actual water source before recommending sump pump installation rather than defaulting to pumping as the solution to every water problem.

Property location and history both inform the sump pump decision. Some Burleson area neighborhoods sit on soils or at elevations that create more water challenges than others. History of flooding or moisture issues at the specific property provides direct evidence of need. Insurance considerations sometimes drive sump pump installation when carriers require flood protection for properties in particular areas. Our team discusses all these factors openly during consultation to help homeowners make informed decisions about whether installation makes sense for their specific situation.

Sump pump sizing depends on the volume of water the system must handle during peak conditions. Properties with light groundwater intrusion or occasional minor water entry typically do well with standard 1/3 horsepower pumps rated around 2,000 to 3,000 gallons per hour. Properties facing more significant water challenges benefit from 1/2 horsepower pumps with capacity around 3,000 to 4,500 gallons per hour. Heavy-duty applications dealing with major groundwater or significant water entry sometimes warrant 3/4 horsepower or larger pumps with capacities exceeding 4,500 gallons per hour.

Head pressure significantly affects effective pump capacity. The pump must lift water from the pit to the discharge point, with vertical lift plus friction losses through piping creating the total head pressure. Pumps deliver less water at higher head pressure than at lower head pressure. Manufacturer pump curves show capacity at different head pressures, which helps select appropriate equipment for the specific installation geometry. Long horizontal discharge runs increase friction losses and effectively reduce pump capacity at the discharge point.

Other factors affect sizing decisions beyond simple capacity calculations. Pumps that cycle frequently during normal operation wear faster than pumps that handle larger volumes during fewer cycles. Backup pump considerations affect total system capacity when primary and backup pumps could operate simultaneously during severe events. Future expansion or changes to the property that might increase water volume should factor into current sizing decisions. Our team performs proper sizing calculations rather than guessing or applying one-size-fits-all recommendations.

Sump pump discharge water needs to go somewhere that prevents it from immediately recirculating back to the pit. Surface discharge to the yard is the most common termination for residential sump pumps, with the discharge line running from inside the home through the exterior wall or foundation and extending sufficient distance to direct water away from the foundation. Extensions including buried drain lines or surface pop-up emitters carry water further from the home before releasing it to the ground or stormwater system.

Discharge connections to municipal stormwater systems exist in some jurisdictions but face restrictions in others. The City of Burleson and surrounding municipalities have specific rules about acceptable discharge that vary between jurisdictions. Sanitary sewer discharge is universally prohibited because the sewer system is not sized for groundwater volumes and the discharge can cause municipal sewer overflows during storms. Our team handles discharge routing in compliance with local code rather than just convenient solutions.

Freeze protection for exterior discharge lines matters during winter months when accumulated water in pipes can freeze and block pump operation when needed. Buried discharge lines that drain back into the home through check valve action avoid freezing problems. Above-ground discharge lines need either insulation or design that prevents water retention to avoid freeze blockage. Some installations include freeze-protection extensions that disconnect during cold weather and reconnect when temperatures rise. Our team plans discharge installations with year-round operation in mind.

Quality sump pumps from major manufacturers typically last 7 to 10 years in residential applications. Heavy-duty cast iron pumps sometimes deliver 15 years or more of service. Entry-level pumps may need replacement after just 5 to 7 years of typical operation. Actual lifespan depends heavily on the specific conditions at the property and the operating frequency.

Several factors affect actual pump lifespan. Pumps that cycle frequently due to consistent groundwater pressure wear faster than pumps that handle occasional events. Water with significant sediment or debris content accelerates impeller wear. Float switch failures often occur before motor failures, sometimes allowing repair rather than complete replacement. Power surges from lightning or utility issues can damage motors prematurely. Maintenance practices including periodic testing and cleaning extend pump life meaningfully.

Recognizing approaching pump failure allows planned replacement rather than emergency response after failure during a major event. Unusual sounds during operation often indicate developing problems. Slower water level reduction during pumping cycles suggests reduced capacity. Frequent cycling on and off during light water conditions points to float switch problems. Visible rust or corrosion on pump components signals general deterioration. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter inspects existing pumps during service calls and recommends replacement when warranted rather than waiting for failure.

Annual maintenance keeps sump pumps operating reliably when they are needed during events. Visual inspection identifies any obvious problems including debris in the pit, corrosion on pump components, or wear at the discharge line. Cleaning the pit removes accumulated sediment that can affect float switch operation. Testing the pump by filling the pit with water confirms proper activation and operation through a complete cycle.

Float switch operation deserves particular attention during maintenance because float failures cause many of the problems that lead to flooding. Moving the float manually verifies smooth operation throughout its range of travel. Checking for any binding or restriction confirms the switch can operate freely when water levels rise. Replacing worn or damaged floats catches problems before they cause flooding during the next event.

Discharge line inspection identifies any developing problems with the plumbing carrying water away from the home. Check valve operation should be verified during testing because failed check valves let water flow back into the pit and shorten pump life through unnecessary cycling. Exterior discharge termination should clear debris that could block water flow during operation. Battery backup systems need their own maintenance including battery testing and replacement on appropriate schedules. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter offers maintenance plans that include scheduled sump pump service for homeowners who want professional inspection and testing rather than relying on do-it-yourself maintenance.

Battery backup sump pumps provide protection when primary pumps fail or when power outages prevent their operation. The backup system includes a secondary pump, a battery, a battery charger, and controls that switch operation to the backup when needed. During normal operation, the charger maintains the battery while the primary pump handles any water that enters the pit. When the primary pump fails or power is lost, the backup pump runs on battery power to continue protecting the home.

Battery capacity determines how long backup operation can continue during extended outages. Standard backup batteries support several hours of operation under typical pumping conditions. Larger batteries or multiple battery configurations extend protection for longer outages. Pumping demand during the outage affects actual runtime because heavier water entry drains the battery faster than light groundwater pressure.

Several considerations affect the backup system decision. Properties facing serious water challenges benefit clearly from backup protection because major storms often cause both heavy water entry and power outages simultaneously. Properties that have never flooded but where flooding would cause significant damage often justify backup investment for peace of mind. Battery maintenance requirements affect long-term cost because batteries need periodic replacement. Water-powered backup systems offer an alternative that uses municipal water supply pressure rather than electricity for operation. Our team discusses backup options openly so homeowners can choose appropriate protection for their specific situation and budget.
