Our Service

Dependable Water Line Repair Service in Burleson, TX

Wet spots in the yard, climbing water bills, and dropping pressure inside the home often trace back to a damaged main service line. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter repairs water lines throughout Burleson, TX, with the right equipment to locate the failure point before any shovel hits the ground. Our team uses pressure testing, acoustic listening tools, and meter monitoring to pinpoint the exact location of the leak. Shifting clay soils, freeze damage, root pressure, and aging galvanized pipe all contribute to failures across older Burleson neighborhoods. We expose only the affected section when conditions allow, which protects landscaping, driveways, and irrigation systems. Repair materials are selected to match or exceed the existing line, with copper, PEX, and HDPE all common choices. Couplings, transition fittings, and shut-off valves are upgraded where corrosion or wear makes future failure likely. Every repair receives a pressure test before backfill, confirming the line holds tight under normal household demand. We coordinate with the city to shut off service at the meter when needed and restore flow once testing passes. Backfill is compacted in lifts to prevent settling and protect the repaired section. Pricing is shared clearly before any digging starts. Since 2007, Burleson families have trusted our crew to fix water line problems cleanly and move on.

CHRIS & BRODY great team, in/out same day, very professional, very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, clean, clean, clean. Explained steps, Communicated proficiently, let Granny hover, & watch, I'm not easy client for any professional. The only thing I wish warranty was minimum 90 days, but I've used, & trusted 1960's plumbing issues, since 2015. We learned to do both roof top clean outs 100 feet minimum for tree roots backing up toilet paper, we only use cheap Scott very thin toilet paper if we don't want more than 1X year clean out. We are seniors, fixed income, every plumbing emergency comes out of food budget. We eat beans & corn bread when we have plumbing issues. God Bless Curly's BIG BLADE PLUMBING Out of Cleburne, Texas. Denise & Christy answer phones, very polite, always helpful, Denise will get you on schedule as soon as possible, never waited very long especially in sewage backups. I always ask for clean, knowledgeable, experienced plumbers. I don't hesitate to call CURLY'S BIG BLADE PLUMBING.

Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter came out to fix an incoming water line that was leaking in between two bushes. The previous company had quoted a higher price and wanted to remove the bushes and replace the shut off valve, which was still good. Big Blade Plumbing fixed the leak for a much cheaper price and didn’t remove any bushes. For that I give them 5 Stars.

After having a different company come out and price gouge me and calling around I couldn’t find anybody to help me with my clogged line, I was parked at a gas station and saw BIG BLADE truck drive by so I got out my phone and called, I was greeted on the phone by Denise who was extremely polite and professional, with no high pressure in setting the appointment. The price was extremely fair and affordable so we went ahead and booked an appointment, Hershel and Dylan arrived promptly like within 30-40 minutes of us calling and setting the appointment, they got here and did exactly what they said they were going to without pressuring me into getting other services they executed the repair so fast and explained to me about my 30 day warranty and potential risks to look out for in the future! I would HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND using this service. Amazing job thank you guys so much for you’re help and relieving me of all the stress that comes with plumbing difficulties!

Water Line Repair Service

Pinpointing the exact location of a water line failure is the most valuable step in any repair, and it is where shortcuts cost homeowners the most money over the long term. Our plumbers begin with a careful interview to learn when the problem started, where wet spots have appeared on the property, what the water bill has done recently, and whether pressure inside the home has changed noticeably over weeks or months leading up to the call. Pressure gauges are attached at outdoor hose bibs and indoor fixtures to map the pressure profile across the property and isolate where losses are occurring within the system. Acoustic leak detection equipment listens for the distinct sound of pressurized water escaping underground, allowing experienced technicians to mark the leak location within a small radius rather than digging blindly across the yard. Tracer wire, when present alongside the original line from the time of installation, helps confirm the pipe route before any digging starts and prevents accidental damage to other utilities. Soil probes, infrared imaging cameras, and selective dye testing supplement acoustic work in difficult situations where the leak is small, intermittent, or buried at unusual depth. Listening at the meter for the rush of water moving when no fixture is open inside the home provides another diagnostic data point that helps confirm an active leak somewhere on the property. Every diagnostic finding is documented and shared with the homeowner before excavation begins, so the agreed scope of work reflects the actual problem rather than a guess at what might be wrong. Photographs and notes from the diagnostic phase support both the repair plan and any insurance claim that may be needed afterward. Finding the leak accurately means digging once, repairing precisely, and restoring the yard with minimum disruption to landscaping, hardscape, and the homeowner’s daily routine.

Repairing a buried water line is rarely as simple as exposing the pipe and tightening a fitting, and our process reflects that reality at every step throughout the project. Once the leak is located, the excavation footprint is planned to allow safe working space while protecting nearby utilities, sprinkler lines, hardscape, and mature plantings that the homeowner wants preserved. Hand digging is used near the suspected leak to avoid striking the pipe with mechanical equipment, while machine excavation is reserved for the bulk material above the working zone where contact with the line is unlikely. Shoring is installed when trench depth and soil conditions warrant it, because no shortcut is worth a collapse with a person in the trench, regardless of how short the work is expected to take. The damaged section is fully exposed and inspected to confirm the failure mode, since what looks like a single pinhole leak sometimes turns out to be a longer section of compromised pipe that needs more extensive replacement than initially expected. Bedding material is cleared from around the leak area and replaced with clean sand or pea gravel around the repair zone before any new fittings are installed against the existing pipe. The repair itself uses approved couplings, transition fittings, and material rated for direct burial in the soil conditions present at the property, with attention to the specific water chemistry that affects long-term performance. Connection techniques vary by pipe material, with copper repairs using soldered, brazed, or press fittings while plastic pipe repairs use solvent welding or compression couplings. Photographic documentation of the buried work protects the homeowner during future sales, inspections, or insurance claims by establishing exactly what was done and what materials were used. Every step is performed with the long-term reliability of the repair in mind rather than just immediate water restoration.

Spot repairs make sense when the rest of the line is sound and the failure is localized to a specific section of pipe that can be cleanly addressed without affecting the broader system. A small section of damaged pipe is cut out cleanly with proper tools, the cut ends are deburred and prepared per manufacturer specifications for the chosen fitting type, and a new section is spliced in using approved couplings designed for buried service in the soil conditions present. Compression couplings, push-fit fittings, traditional soldered or brazed connections, and fusion-welded joints each have their place depending on the pipe material, water temperature, code requirements, and the specific conditions at the repair location. Our team selects the fitting type based on what will perform best for decades rather than what is fastest or easiest to install in the moment, because shortcuts at this stage create repeat problems within months. Tracer wire is reattached or extended across the repair so future locating equipment can still find the line during inspections, additional repairs, or future excavation work near the path. Backfill is placed carefully in lifts, with bedding material directly around the repair and compacted native soil above that gradually rebuilds the trench profile without creating voids or settling problems. Pressure testing the repaired line at full operating pressure confirms the fix held under realistic conditions before the trench is closed and the surface restored. Spot repairs done well can extend the useful life of a water service by many years without the cost and disruption of full replacement, particularly when the rest of the line is in sound condition. Documentation of the repair location, the materials used, and the inspection results becomes part of the property record for future reference. Our team approaches every spot repair as work that should last decades rather than just provide temporary relief.

Repeated failures along the same line usually signal that spot repairs have run their course and full replacement is the better path forward, even though the immediate cost is higher than another patch. Galvanized steel lines installed before the 1970s corrode internally over decades, and once one section fails, others typically follow within months or a few years as the overall pipe condition deteriorates throughout. Polybutylene piping, common in homes built in the 1980s and early 1990s, has a documented history of widespread failures and should be replaced rather than repeatedly patched once any failure has occurred. Older copper lines installed in aggressive soil sometimes develop multiple pinhole leaks within a short span of time, indicating that the entire run has become unreliable rather than just one section being problematic. We share this honestly during the repair assessment, because spending repair dollars on a line approaching end of life rarely makes financial sense over the next few years when total costs are calculated. Replacement options include traditional open-cut trenching for properties with reasonable surface conditions, pipe bursting for properties with extensive landscaping that benefits from minimal surface disruption, and directional boring when the existing pipe path is problematic or when bypassing the old line entirely makes more sense. Each option is explained with realistic timelines, costs, expected service life, and surface restoration requirements specific to the property. The decision belongs to the homeowner and we support whichever path serves them best given their budget, planning horizon for the property, and tolerance for surface disruption. Some homeowners choose repair anyway to defer the larger investment, and we perform quality work on whichever option they select. Our role is to provide accurate information rather than push any particular outcome.

Repair work on aging galvanized lines requires special care because the pipe walls have often corroded internally to the point that traditional couplings will not hold a reliable seal. Standard compression fittings can crush thinned pipe walls during tightening, creating a new leak directly adjacent to the original failure point and turning a simple repair into a more complex problem. Threaded connections may strip during disassembly if the threads have rusted through, leaving no way to make a new connection without cutting back further into the line to find sound material. Transition fittings designed specifically for galvanized-to-copper or galvanized-to-PEX connections allow safer repairs when partial replacement is the goal, providing a reliable joint between materials with different characteristics. Cutting and removing larger sections of compromised pipe is often necessary to reach material with enough integrity to hold a new fitting properly, which means galvanized repairs frequently grow in scope once excavation begins and the actual condition becomes visible. Our team carries the specialized tools and adapters needed for galvanized work, including pipe wrenches in multiple sizes, cutting tools that work without putting excessive stress on aged pipe, and the various transition fittings that bridge between materials. We evaluate the pipe condition carefully before committing to a spot repair, because misjudging the situation leads to either an inadequate repair or unnecessary additional work. When the line is clearly past saving, we say so directly rather than wasting the homeowner’s money on a repair that will fail again soon, even if the conversation is harder than just doing what was originally requested. Honest assessments build trust over time, and trust matters more than any single job in maintaining the relationships our business depends on.

Trenchless repair methods offer real value when the leak location is awkward or the surface above the line is difficult to restore through traditional methods. Pipe bursting can replace an entire service line in a single day with only two small access pits at each end, and it is often the right choice when multiple repair points along an aging line make spot fixes impractical and full replacement is the better answer anyway. Cured-in-place lining is available for some applications, where a flexible liner is inserted into the existing pipe and cured into a new internal surface that seals leaks and restores flow without removing the original pipe at all. Directional boring allows a brand-new line to be installed along a different path entirely, bypassing the failed pipe without removing it from the ground and avoiding obstacles that the original installer did not anticipate. Each method has specific requirements for pipe condition, access space, soil conditions, and material compatibility that our team evaluates during the assessment phase before recommending any particular approach. Trenchless work typically costs more per foot than traditional excavation, but the savings on landscape restoration, driveway repair, sidewalk replacement, and labor often justify the difference on the right property. Mature trees, decorative gardens, paver patios, concrete walkways, and irrigation systems can frequently be preserved entirely when trenchless methods are chosen, which is particularly valuable on properties where these features represent significant investment. We present trenchless as an option whenever it makes practical and financial sense for the specific property, but we also say directly when traditional excavation is the better answer for the situation. The right method depends on the specific property, the specific failure, and the specific homeowner preferences. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter handles all methods rather than pushing one approach for every situation.

Restoration after a water line repair is as important to the homeowner as the repair itself, even though it happens after the actual plumbing work is finished and tested. Backfill is placed in lifts and compacted progressively to prevent settling that would create depressions in the yard months later as the trench material consolidates naturally. Native soil is screened to remove rocks and debris before being returned to the trench, particularly in the layer directly above the bedding material where rocks could damage the new pipe. Sod is replaced when possible, using the original pieces if they can be preserved during excavation and kept watered while the work proceeds. Sprinkler heads, drip lines, and irrigation valves damaged during the work are repaired or replaced as part of the project scope rather than left for the homeowner to address separately. Concrete patches, paver replacements, and driveway repairs are coordinated with qualified subcontractors when those surfaces had to be cut for access, since plumbing crews are not always the right trade for finished hardscape work. The site is left clean with debris hauled away properly, the work area swept or raked smooth, and the surrounding landscape returned to as close to original condition as practical given the work that was needed. Tracer wire and locator tape installed during the repair help future technicians find the line without unnecessary exploratory digging. Photographs of the completed work, including before-and-after images, become part of the project documentation that the homeowner receives. Final walkthrough with the homeowner confirms everything is restored to expectations before we consider the job complete. Customer satisfaction at the end matters as much as the technical quality of the underground work that the homeowner will never see again.

Our Service

Why Hiring a Licensed Plumber for Water Line Repair Matters in Burleson

Water line repair sits at the intersection of excavation, code compliance, and pressure system knowledge that few untrained workers possess. Licensed plumbers in Texas train on pipe materials, fitting compatibility, soil dynamics, and the proper way to integrate repairs into existing service lines. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter has held a Texas plumbing license since 2007, giving Burleson customers a verified, accountable contractor for every repair. A licensed professional reads pressure readings, soil conditions, and leak indicators together to confirm the actual failure point before excavation begins. Unlicensed repairs often dig in the wrong spot, use mismatched couplings, or skip the pressure test that confirms the fix actually holds. Licensed plumbers also recognize when a single leak signals broader line failure, which changes the repair conversation toward replacement. Texas plumbing code addresses cross-connection protection, approved materials, and connection standards that exist to safeguard drinking water. Our crew respects every requirement on every visit. Liability and bonding coverage shields your yard, driveway, and surrounding utilities through the repair. Permits and inspections, when required, preserve your insurance coverage and document the work. Honest reporting on repair versus replacement comes standard with our service. Choosing a licensed plumber like Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter means the leak is found, the repair holds, and your water service runs clean.

Most Common Water Line Repair Questions

Water line repair can range from a simple fitting replacement to a full underground excavation depending on the failure and the pipe condition. Below are the questions Burleson homeowners ask most often when water line trouble appears.

A leaking water line often signals its presence through clues at the surface long before the homeowner notices a problem at a fixture. Unexplained wet spots in the yard that stay damp even during dry weather are one of the most common early signs of an underground leak. Lush green patches of grass in otherwise normal turf often grow above leaks because the constant moisture and oxygen feed the roots. Soggy soil, soft ground that gives underfoot, or actual standing water above the suspected line are advanced symptoms requiring immediate attention. Sinkholes or depressions in the lawn sometimes develop where water has been washing soil away over time. The location of these surface clues often points within a few feet of the actual leak when read carefully. Our team uses these visual indicators alongside acoustic equipment to narrow the leak location before any excavation starts.

Rising water bills without any change in household usage are another strong indicator of a buried leak. Homeowners who track their bills monthly often catch the increase quickly, while those who pay without checking sometimes miss months of waste before noticing. Comparing current bills to the same month in previous years removes seasonal variation and makes the increase obvious. The water meter itself can be used as a leak detector by shutting off all water inside the home and watching whether the meter continues to register flow. A spinning leak indicator dial or a digital counter that keeps advancing means water is moving somewhere it should not be. Some city meters have built-in leak alerts that trigger when continuous flow is detected for extended periods. We help homeowners interpret these readings during the initial service call. Recognizing the warning signs early saves significant money on wasted water.

Changes inside the home can also point to a service line problem rather than an interior plumbing issue. Reduced water pressure across the entire home, especially when no specific fixture is the clear culprit, often indicates restriction or leakage in the main supply line. Air sputtering from faucets when first opened sometimes signals that the line has lost full prime due to a leak large enough to allow air infiltration. Unusual noises in the walls, including running water with all fixtures off, can travel from a leak in the buried line up into the home through the entry point. Hot water that takes much longer than usual to arrive at fixtures sometimes points to a leak between the water heater and the rest of the home, though this can also indicate interior plumbing issues. Our plumbers test pressure at multiple points to distinguish service line problems from interior plumbing concerns. Accurate diagnosis prevents unnecessary work and focuses the repair on the actual cause.

Water line repair costs vary substantially based on the location and severity of the leak, the depth of the line, the pipe material, and the access conditions on the property. Simple spot repairs in soft soil with easy access fall at the lower end of the price spectrum and can sometimes be completed in a few hours. Repairs requiring deeper excavation, crossing under hardscape, or working around mature trees and irrigation systems cost more because of the additional labor and restoration involved. Multiple repair points along the same line push the total higher, and at some threshold full replacement becomes the better financial choice. Trenchless repair methods carry a higher per-foot cost than open trenching but often save money when surface restoration would otherwise dominate the bottom line. Each project is quoted individually after a thorough assessment, so the homeowner knows exactly what to expect before authorizing work.

Permit fees and inspection requirements add to the total project cost in most jurisdictions across our service area. The City of Burleson, along with Crowley, Mansfield, Cleburne, and Fort Worth, each have their own permitting procedures and fee schedules for water line work. Permits are part of how the city protects homeowners, the public water supply, and future buyers of the property. We pull every required permit on the homeowner’s behalf and include those fees in the upfront quote so there are no surprises later. Inspections after the repair verify proper fittings, depth, and pressure performance before the trench can be backfilled. Documentation generated by the permit and inspection process becomes part of the permanent property record. Skipping permits to save a small amount upfront creates much larger problems during home sales and insurance claims.

Restoration costs are often underestimated by homeowners new to underground plumbing work. Sod replacement, concrete patching, paver repair, driveway restoration, and irrigation system fixes can add significantly to the total bottom line on larger jobs. Our quotes itemize restoration costs separately so the homeowner can see what is included and what may be handled separately. Some customers prefer to manage landscape restoration themselves to control costs, and we accommodate that approach when it makes sense for the situation. Financing options are available for qualified customers when projects exceed comfortable cash outlay or when full replacement becomes the necessary choice mid-repair. Our office staff walks through financing options before work begins so the homeowner can plan accordingly. Transparent pricing reflects how we have operated since 2007. Honest quotes are the foundation of every repair we deliver.

A typical spot repair on a residential water service line takes between three and six hours from arrival to cleanup, depending on the depth of the line and the conditions at the leak location. Locating the leak precisely usually takes 30 to 60 minutes with proper acoustic equipment and pressure testing. Excavation to expose the damaged pipe varies widely depending on depth, soil type, and whether obstacles like roots or rocks slow the dig. The actual repair, including cutting out the damaged section and installing new fittings, often takes less than an hour once the pipe is fully exposed. Pressure testing the repair adds another 30 minutes to several hours depending on the test pressure and hold time required by code. Backfill and surface restoration consume the remaining time on the job. Most spot repairs are completed in a single visit, and water is restored to the home before our team leaves the property.

Complex repairs or full replacements naturally take longer than simple spot fixes. Multiple leak points along the same line, particularly on aging galvanized or polybutylene service lines, often shift the project from repair to full replacement after the initial assessment. Full replacement using open trenching typically takes one to three days depending on the length of the run, hardscape crossings, and weather conditions. Trenchless replacement using pipe bursting or directional boring usually completes the buried work in a single day, with connection work and inspections sometimes extending into a second day. Permit processing and inspection scheduling can add lead time before excavation begins or before backfill can proceed. Restoration work, particularly concrete patching or driveway repair, may extend several days beyond the actual plumbing portion of the project. Realistic timelines are part of every upfront discussion with the homeowner.

Weather and ground conditions in North Texas occasionally extend even straightforward repairs. Heavy rain saturates clay soil and makes trench work substantially slower and messier. Hard freezes during winter months can complicate excavation, though they are relatively uncommon in our service area. Hot summer temperatures slow physical labor and may require adjusted work schedules to protect crew members and maintain quality standards. Soil conditions at depth sometimes surprise everyone with unexpected rock, buried construction debris, or unmarked utilities not shown on locator markings. Our team plans for typical conditions but communicates promptly when unexpected obstacles emerge during the work. Clear communication keeps the homeowner informed and prevents misunderstandings about scope and timeline. Patience pays off on every repair, and rushing past surprises is how new problems get created.

The repair-versus-replace decision depends on the age of the line, the material, the number of failure points, and the overall condition of the buried pipe. A single leak in a relatively young copper, PEX, or HDPE line is almost always a clear-cut repair scenario, since the rest of the pipe should perform well for many more years. Multiple leaks along the same line, even when each one looks repairable on its own, often signal that the entire pipe has reached end of life. Galvanized steel lines installed before the 1970s and polybutylene lines from the 1980s and early 1990s typically should be replaced rather than repeatedly patched. Spot repairs on these older materials sometimes hold for a few months or a year, only to be followed by new leaks at adjacent sections. We share this honestly during the assessment phase. Spending repair money on a line approaching end of life is rarely the best use of the homeowner’s budget.

Internal pipe condition matters as much as the visible exterior when evaluating repair options. Galvanized lines that look intact from outside often have corroded internal walls that have reduced the pipe bore to a small fraction of its original diameter. Even if a repair holds at the leak site, the remaining line cannot deliver adequate flow or pressure to the home. Camera inspection is rarely practical on small-diameter water service lines, but pressure testing, flow measurement, and assessment of cut pipe ends during excavation provide indirect evidence of internal condition. Polybutylene piping has well-documented failure modes that affect the entire length of pipe simultaneously, not just isolated spots. Our team draws on years of field experience to read these signs accurately. The recommendation we deliver reflects what we have seen on similar properties across the Burleson area.

Homeowner plans for the property also influence the decision. A short-term owner planning to sell within a few years may prefer a spot repair to address an immediate problem at lower cost. A long-term owner planning to stay for decades typically benefits more from full replacement with modern materials that will outlast the rest of the home’s plumbing. Resale considerations matter, because home inspectors regularly flag aging water service lines during pre-sale inspections. Full replacement with documentation often resolves buyer concerns and supports a smoother transaction. We discuss all of these factors openly with the homeowner before any work begins. Our role is to provide accurate information and quality workmanship rather than push any particular outcome. The right answer truly does vary from one property and one owner to the next.

Water line repair almost always requires some surface disruption to reach the buried pipe and complete the work safely. The extent of that disruption depends on the depth of the line, the location of the leak, the chosen repair method, and the existing surface features along the work area. A spot repair on a line buried two feet deep in an open lawn area creates a modest trench that can be restored to near-original appearance with proper backfill technique. Repairs requiring deeper excavation, hardscape crossings, or work near mature trees naturally create more visible impact on the property. Our team minimizes surface damage by digging only what is needed, protecting nearby features with plywood or barriers, and stockpiling excavated soil on tarps rather than directly on grass. Sod is often removed in intact pieces that can be replaced after backfill. Careful technique during the dig pays dividends during the restoration phase.

Trenchless repair methods preserve the surface across the bulk of the line route, leaving only small access pits at the start and end points. Pipe bursting and directional boring both fall into this category, and they are increasingly popular among Burleson homeowners with mature landscaping or extensive hardscape. The upfront cost of trenchless work is higher than traditional trenching, but the savings on restoration often justify the premium. Trees, sprinkler systems, paver patios, decorative gardens, and concrete walkways can frequently be preserved entirely. Our team evaluates every project for trenchless suitability and presents the option whenever it makes practical sense. Some repair scenarios are not candidates for trenchless work due to pipe condition, routing, or access constraints. Honest assessments include direct conversation about which methods will and will not work on a given property.

Restoration after any underground repair is a planned part of the project rather than an afterthought. Backfill is placed in lifts and compacted progressively to prevent the surface settling that creates depressions over time. Native soil is screened to remove rocks and debris before being returned to the trench above the bedding material. Sod is replaced when possible, and disturbed soil is graded smoothly to match surrounding terrain. Sprinkler heads, drip lines, and irrigation valves damaged during the work are repaired or replaced as part of the standard project scope. Concrete patches, paver replacements, and driveway repairs are coordinated with qualified subcontractors when those surfaces had to be cut for access. The site is left clean, with all debris hauled away and the work area swept or raked before we leave. Final walkthrough with the homeowner confirms restoration meets expectations before the project is closed out.

Soil movement is one of the leading causes of water line failure across the Burleson area. The expansive clay soil common in North Texas swells when wet and shrinks when dry, putting cyclical stress on buried pipes year after year. Drought conditions exacerbate this movement, as deep soil cracks form and pull on pipe joints with significant force. Heavy rains following dry periods cause rapid swelling that can shift pipes out of alignment. Older joints, particularly threaded galvanized connections and soldered copper fittings, are vulnerable to stress fractures from repeated soil movement. Plastic piping like PEX-A and HDPE tolerates soil movement much better than older rigid materials, which is one reason these materials have become standard for new installations. Soil-related failures often appear at fittings rather than along the middle of pipe runs.

Corrosion accounts for a large share of water line failures, particularly on older galvanized steel and certain copper installations. Galvanized lines corrode from the inside over decades, gradually reducing the pipe bore and eventually breaching the wall to create leaks. Copper can develop pinhole leaks in aggressive soils, where high acidity, salt content, or stray electrical currents accelerate the natural oxidation process. Polybutylene piping suffers from chemical degradation that affects the entire pipe length, not just isolated spots, and these failures often appear in clusters. Tree roots occasionally compress buried pipes against rocks or other roots, creating wear points that eventually fail. Galvanic corrosion at improper transitions between dissimilar metals can also degrade pipe sections rapidly. Our team assesses corrosion patterns during every repair to inform recommendations about the rest of the line.

Freeze damage represents another failure mode that affects water service lines, even in the relatively mild winters of North Texas. Pipes buried at insufficient depth are vulnerable when extended cold snaps push the freeze line deeper than usual. Lines running through unconditioned garage spaces, crawl spaces, or exterior walls inside the home are at higher risk than properly buried sections. The freeze of February 2021 caused widespread damage across our service area, and we continue to repair lines that were weakened during that event. Pressure surges, water hammer, and operating pressures above 80 psi also stress water service lines over time, accelerating wear at fittings and joints. Improper bedding during the original installation can cause point loading that wears through the pipe over years of operation. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter evaluates all of these factors during repair work to address not just the immediate leak but the underlying causes that contributed to it.

Yes, the water supply to the entire home must be shut off during the actual repair work on a water service line. The main shutoff valve at the home, typically located near where the service line enters the house, is the first valve operated when starting the repair. A working shutoff at the home allows the rest of the property to remain connected to city water until the moment excavation reaches the damaged section. If the home-side shutoff is damaged, leaking, or completely inoperable, the city meter shutoff becomes the next option. Some Burleson properties have an additional shutoff at the meter or near the property line that gives access to a secondary point of control. Our team identifies the working shutoff during the initial assessment so the homeowner knows what to expect.

City water department coordination is required in some repair scenarios. If neither the home shutoff nor any accessible valve will close fully, the city water department may need to shut off service at the main. This involves scheduling with the city, which can add lead time to the project. Our office handles this coordination directly so the homeowner does not have to navigate municipal procedures. Most repairs do not require city involvement because at least one accessible shutoff valve typically functions adequately. Replacing the home shutoff valve during a repair, particularly when it has not been operated in many years and may fail when finally closed, is sometimes prudent. We evaluate this during the assessment and present it as part of the repair scope when warranted. A working shutoff is essential equipment for every home.

The duration of the water outage during the repair depends on the type of repair, the depth of the line, and the complexity of the connections involved. Simple spot repairs typically require water to be off for two to four hours, including the actual fitting replacement and any pressure testing. Full replacements naturally take longer, often requiring water to be off for most of a day or even into a second day on larger projects. We communicate the expected outage duration clearly before work begins so the homeowner can plan accordingly. Buckets of water for flushing toilets, drinking water for the household, and arrangements for showers elsewhere can all be planned in advance with proper notice. Restoring water before the end of the work day is the standard goal on every repair. Working through complications quickly is part of how we deliver reliable service.

Maintaining proper water pressure is one of the most effective ways to extend the life of any water service line. Pressure above 80 psi stresses pipe walls, fittings, and joints unnecessarily, accelerating wear over time. A pressure reducing valve installed at the meter or just inside the home regulates incoming pressure to a safe level, typically between 50 and 70 psi for residential use. This single piece of equipment protects not just the buried service line but also the interior plumbing, fixtures, water heater, and appliances throughout the home. Pressure should be measured periodically with a gauge at an outdoor hose bib to confirm the regulator continues to function correctly. Replacing a worn pressure reducing valve is a modest investment compared to the damage uncontrolled pressure can cause. Big Blade Plumbing & Rooter inspects pressure regulation during every service call.

Backflow prevention is another protective measure that benefits both the property and the public water system. Backflow preventers stop contaminated water from flowing backward into the supply line during pressure drop events. Irrigation systems, fire suppression systems, swimming pools, and other potential cross-connection sources should have approved backflow prevention installed at the connection point. Annual testing of backflow devices is required in many jurisdictions and is a smart practice everywhere. Our team installs and tests backflow preventers as part of comprehensive water service work. Protecting the public water supply protects everyone, including your own household. Code requirements around backflow have grown stricter over the years, and existing systems sometimes need upgrades to meet current standards.

Awareness of warning signs allows homeowners to address small problems before they become large ones. Periodic walks around the property to check for unexplained wet spots, lush grass patches, or surface depressions take only a few minutes but can catch leaks early. Monitoring water bills monthly and comparing them to seasonal norms flags unusual increases that often indicate underground leaks. Pressure checks at outdoor hose bibs once or twice a year confirm the supply is performing normally. Knowing the location and operation of the main shutoff valve allows quick response when problems do occur. Scheduling a professional plumbing inspection every few years catches developing issues that homeowners might miss. We perform comprehensive inspections of water service systems for Burleson homeowners who want peace of mind. Prevention is always less expensive than emergency repair.
